An Outstanding book for your coffee table or reading stand
If you are interested in Roman painting this an excellent book with beautiful renderings of paintings many of which no longer exist or areheavily damaged over the time since discovery (c 1750-1900) to the present. If you visit Pompeii you might want to bring a packet ofthe paintings (in the book there are sets for various houses and some taken from the Naples museum which were excavated earlierand thus of unknown provenance except for city). Another advantage is that many of the illustrations show the settings of paintingsat the time of discovery when the "art" was removed to the museum and the remainder of the wall was left to decay The generalpractice until the 1860's and depending on the quality even later especially in lesser houses.

Great looking book with lots to see inside! Gorgeous in every way.
Beautiful package and beautiful interior. If you love interior design you will find value in both the look of this oversized coffee table book as well as the historically significant details of the homes of Pompeii found between the exquisite covers. The great influence the rediscovery of Pompeii had on design is reason enough to have this volume. The overall presentation is a bonus. BTW this book is HUGE!

The printing is just fine
Sadly the printing quality is not as good as the other huge art books published by Taschen, while I do LOVE the paper whose texture and matte looking are fabulous!Texts are no problem, quite informative.

Outstanding scholarship; makes a wonderful addition to those interested. I also recommend Pompeii: The History, Life and Art of the Buried City by by Marisa Ranieri Panetta, an incredibly beautiful book.

It's just as well it comes in a sturdy cardboard carrying case with a handle attached
There's no shortage of very large and heavy tomes on the subject of Pompeii (e.g. those edited by Filippo Coarelli and by Marisa Ranieri Panetta) but for sheer size and heft this new Taschen publication must surely take the biscuit. It's certainly a big beast, a veritable mastodon in fact. Do not buy it if you have weak wrists. It's just as well it comes in a sturdy cardboard carrying case with a handle attached. There was already a very handsome Getty publication offering a selection of the Niccolini plates but this Taschen publication gives us the complete series and hence has three times as many pages, You get to see a wonderful panorama of the frescoes, mosaics, statues, objets d'art and everyday items that had been brought to light during the course of the 19th century. If I have a slight criticism of this Taschen publication it would be that the colour reproduction is marginally not as rich or as sharp as in the Getty one - I'm not sure if this is due to the type of matt paper used in the former versus the glossy paper of the latter - but I don't wish to make too much of this point. This is a magnificent publication, the ultimate fix for all Pompeii junkies, and whilst the RRP of £135 looks a bit daunting there are Amazon partners offering new copies for about £75 and at that sort of price it really is great value. If you order a copy make sure to visit the gym and pump iron before handling it and ensure your bookshelf is supported by strong screws.Incidentally. it took me some time to figure out how to open the carrying case without damaging it - there are two small but not very obvious tabs either side of the handle that need to be pulled out so as to get the cardboard covers to come apart easily.

This is much more than a book. This is a piece of art and history in your hands. Printed in high quality paper and in big scale, this is an eternal and remarkable register of the art of Pompeii.
