It should kill instantly or quickly. Today, unfortunately, I found a mouse alive with its head in trap and legs out the back. It seemed to be fully functioning mouse with all limbs working. There's only one way...don't use peanut butter. Use peanuts, it takes so long for the ants to bring up the peanut wagon that the trap has already done it's duty and caught a mouse.
