Basically just a quick reference guide
The title is misleading. I came across this book in my college’s bookstore so I had the chance to flip through it before ultimately deciding to purchase it. Don’t buy this book expecting to find too many “hidden” or “secret” places; the book is arranged as a series of top-5s which, in itself, is a contradiction to obscurity. The type of thing you will find in this book: top-5 places to get fish and chips, top-5 art supplies stores, top-5 independent bookstores, top-5 places to get craft ale, top-5 vintage clothing shops, etc. Additionally, each highlighted place is accompanied by a brief paragraph that mostly just serves to give you a high-level overview including contact info. I gave it 5-stars simply because I love it as a quick reference guide and I think it does a good job in that regard. If you buy it with that purpose in mind, I think you’ll be satisfied with it too.

Misleading premise dissappoints
Everybody likes a good secret, there are a lot of secret London books out there, and when you see 500 of them in one book, you think that's going to be an interesting read. It's really not, and the truly hidden gems are spread thinly throughout the book. 95 places to eat or buy food, restaurants, bakeries and markets, five spots each that could be from TripAdvisor or Yelp pages 70 places for a drink, same kind of review site material 75 places to shop, 55 places to enjoy culture, galleries, museums, and live music 50 places to discover historic London 40 places to discover contemporary London 25 things to do with children 20 places to sleep 35 weekend activities 35 random facts So out of 500 places to see and random facts maybe 25 were genuinely interesting. Check out the back cover and sample pages, maybe go to their website, it's on the back cover, see if any of that interested you before buying. I bought it based on the premise, and this book isn't for anyone looking to explore the secret, hidden, abandoned, spots in London. More than half the places in book are touristy places that aren't very well-kept secrets at all. Very few of the 500 places have photographs, you'd honestly be better off searching for affordable hotels in London than looking at their one paragraph each about 5 of them.

Not what I expected
I was expecting something different from the book. I thought it would be more about interesting places where historical or funny things have happened. Instead it lists stores and restaraunts in the different areas of the city. It was of some value...just not what I had wanted

NOT 2017 edition.
Contrary to the picture, what is being sent is the 3rd updated edition which was made in 2016. It is NOT the latest one from April 2017 and therefore is NOT a 2017 edition.

It more than satisfied us, and we joking referred to it as ...
I purchased this book in the hope that it would provide us with some off-the-beaten track recommendations for our recent trip to NYC. It more than satisfied us, and we joking referred to it as our NY-Bible (or nyble) throughout the trip! I only wish I'd had more time in the city to experience everything the book mentioned! We mostly used the food tips, and it never let us down. Each place we visited was characterful and we rarely had to queue. The other activities were really interesting, and often involved places my family who've lived in Manhattan for 20+ years didn't know about. This is a really excellent guidebook to augment a more traditional rough guide / Lonely Planet.
