Does the remote have to stay within 100 feet of the outlet for the timer to work or can you place the remote out of range once you program the outlet?

In order to function correctly the remote would need to be in range of the receiver/outlet as the remote is sending the programmed ON/OFF signal.

Does the remote work for multiple receivers? For use on 2 levels of home, do I need two brands to avoid turning on upper level when not wanted.

Yes, the remote timer will work with multiple receives but all receivers on the same frequency. This means that all devices will turn on and off at the same time.

will the remore work through a thin wall?

I'm not sure about a thin wall but we use it through glass to turn on outside lights approx. 100' away without any trouble.
