Animal Farm - New - by George Orwell

This book is very great my kid loved it very much. It was a great summer reading book what a plot twist.

Animal Farm is a very interesting and easy-to-read book, with a story that hooks you right from the start. I really liked how it uses animals to convey profound messages about society, power, and politics. It features memorable characters and offers a lesson that invites reflection even after you’ve finished reading it. It is a short read, yet one packed with meaning. I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys intelligent books with thought-provoking messages.

What an amazing piece to add to my collection. It is much smaller than I thought (did not read the description). A hand-sized book beautifully compact with gilded paged. The standard travel-sizeI would say for a fine work of literature. The hardcover is a beautiful light blue and the art on the book-cover is charming! What a fantastic gift for a history buff or bookworm. Please support this print if you can (my copy was delayed - but it was absolutely fine and worth it once I saw it).

Animal Farm by George Orwell I first read this book 10 years after I was out of high school. I remember my high school english instructor saying something along these lines, "I see no reason to have you read Animal Farm." Of course this was the same instructor pushing Clinton/Gore bumper stickers on us for extra credit (kind of like telling kindergardners you'll give them as many Jolly Ranchers as they want if they vote clinton/gore). I was young, impressionable, and living with two far left parents (they both voted for Mondale for God sake). Years later I was actually listening to Michael Savage while in grid lock traffic. He was talking about our current political climate and discussing it in relation to Animal Farm (I had no frame of referance). I was still a far left little wacko myself and was only listening to Savage so I could argue with him (Portland Oregon has a way of doing that to impressionable youth). This was the moment I started to awake from my fog. I decided to purchase this fine book (got it used right here on Amazon for less than a dollar). If you want specifics about the story this is the wrong review for you. Instead I am going to focus on what this story did to open my eyes. I began to read this book and amazingly my entire political universe changed. Why did my high school teacher decide this book wasn't important. If anything the story is historical in that it describes the reality of the American mind during the cold war. How was this book tossed aside so easily by teachers who were supposed to be teaching me to think for myself? The clouds started to lift from my eyes. I began to realize that I had been blindly following like the rest of the sheeple. That's when I started reading, thinking, not believing statements just because so and so said so. I eventually gave this book away at a garage sale. It was hard for me to part with this tathered old library copy of Animal Farm. The old horse (Boxer was his name right?) who kept trying to work harder for the Marxist Pigs; only to be sold for slaughter once his usefulness to the Pigs had come to an end. It reminds me of the middle class who say to themselves "I must work harder" in our current society to maintain their current standard of living. Will we as Americans end up at the financial slaughter house because of the free trade practices of semi socialist government? Most don't realize that Marx expressed the need for free trade in letters to Engels in order to bring down the bourgeois. The pigs preached in the beginning that "four legs good, two legs bad." Sounds like the nonsense that disseminates like a disease from the Repugnicans and Demoncrats. They both spew their hate and promise change. Yet somehow just like the pigs they both end up walking on two legs in the end. The end of the book states that men were with the pigs (playing cards I believe). They started to fight and their countanences were the same. This book is a must read if your teacher just so happened to leave this off your high school reading list. Originally written to depict communism. How sad that you can see communism spreading into our own society now.

Weekend before school starts here in the metro Atlanta area, and we realized that we had overlooked a summer reading requirement for an honors Lit class for my rising ninth grader. I ordered this book on Friday, it arrived on Saturday. My son is thrilled to see it’s a small book, and it came in great condition. The book had been wrapped against moisture, which is good because it was raining when it was delivered. All in all five stars would recommend.

a classic for a reason!

As with most readers, my intro to George Orwell came by way of Nineteen Eighty-Four. The novel remains a dystopian masterpiece by which all others are measured. It birthed an entire genre and coined the “Orwellian” adjective, used to describe ideas that are uniquely corrosive to society. Its influence can be seen in countless titles, everything from The Handmaid’s Tale to The Hunger Games. Nineteen Eighty-Four is a haunting tale of totalitarian overreach. It’s very hard to read, but not because of challenging prose. Rather, it carries an uncomfortable realness and familiarity. The ongoing ails of society are trapped within its pages. The lessons are disturbing, necessary, and leave you with a looming sense of dread that is impossible to shake. Thus, a general rule for reading more Orwell is “Did you like Nineteen Eighty-Four?” In answering the question for myself, the term “like” might be a tad anemic. Orwell painted with words and few can match his prose, so “appreciate” sounds better since it’s damn near impossible to “enjoy” Nineteen Eighty-Four. But yes, once the mind-melting horror had faded from my conscience, I was ready to explore the next Orwellian nightmare. For most, that takes the form of Animal Farm. This is a short novella written as a satirical fable, the premise of which is deceptively simple. The animals of a poorly run farm decide to rebel. They drive out the human owner and take over operations, with the goal of creating an animal utopia. Sounds cute, right? But then you learn that Orwell mirrored the story on the events that sparked the Russian Revolution and rise of Stalin. It goes about as well as you’d think. From an educational standpoint, Animal Farm does something truly remarkable. It teaches us about the perils of dictatorships in a short parable about rebellious livestock. We learn, in no uncertain terms, just how easy it is to manipulate good intent. In the immortal words of Ron Burgundy, “That escalated quickly.” Orwell knew how to twist a stomach, and this frightening novella is another shining example. So, did I “like” Animal Farm? Not particularly. But that’s only because it was a brilliant, heedful, and harrowing read that stabbed my brain.

Great story! Nothing I say in this review can say anything that has not already been said better by so many people before me. Therefore I will just say that this specific clothbound classic edition is of the quality and beauty worthy of this classic story!

Story line is really fascinating in terms of how Orwell built the whole imaginary world but yet logical and convincing.
