The Holiness of God

I cannot rate this book more highly. It is theology with accessibility. Dr. Sproul laboured in love to get the points across with unusual clarity without compromising precision. He covers profound concepts without straining our brain. He carries reader along without losing us on the threads of his thoughts, which always hit home with truths. In fact, he rightly proves his points - that no one can be bored when he is having an encounter with God. This is what this book achieves for us - an encounter with God - and it is most captivating! Dr. Sproul does not shy away from difficult passages in the bible. He is a great teacher. Like Paul, he predicts what questions people would ask, asks them for us and answers them. We realise that why we find those questions so difficult to accept is because we have a wrong concept of God. He skilfully breaks down our preconceptions and exposes our sinful nature! Ouch! Then he shows us the holiness of God. This topic is significant as I agree that the holiness of God is often misrepresented and/or misunderstood. Today's churches may care more about making God accessible than manifesting His holiness. If I may say so, sacred place and sacred time has been desecrated in our culture today. As we gather for worship, we are not taught that we come into the presence of God. We downplay the church building, taking that church is the people and not the building, so we lose that visual effect of sacred place to assist us. We further make it difficult for ourselves when we call Sunday service family service rather than worship service. This just shows where our focus is or what we think we gather on Sunday is for. When we put fellowship above the encounter of God in a worship service, I fear that God may really have departed from us. We like to challenge traditions, and we do not believe in structures. We believe we can reinvent our service format to suit our time and taste at the expense of the wisdom of past saints. It is easier to feel that God is our pal than God is God in awe and reverence and fear - which sounds like distance and old-fashioned. But I would argue this is the right response when we encounter our Holy God! God is unchanging, and why should our reaction be any different from the prophets in the OT? I don't know how it comes about, but we have adopted such a causal attitude towards God that should make us cringe. We have lost the sense that God is infinitely different from us - He is not our pal! Dr. Sproul talks about the threshold as a place of transition. We have totally lost that - we stroll from the outside world into church service seamlessly without any transition or any mental preparation. The pendulum probably has swung too far to the other extreme from the olden days when we reserved the best suits for Sunday. It is hard to say where to draw the line but beach wear of T-shirt, shorts and flipflops to preach from the pulpit in the weather of this country probably has gone too far. This book is very helpful to recapture for us who God is, which we don't easily get represented at modern Church. It terrifies me to think if we have not seen the holiness of God in our worship, have we profaned God? There is not a neutral ground, is there, if we think about it? If we do not see worship demonstrated for us in corporate worship, what hope do we have in our private worship and relationship with God? This book is what everyone who goes to church should read if we wish to put God back in His rightful place in our life.

Certified Banger. What a great book for delving into the riches of the Holiness of God.

One of RC Sproul's best books! The book includes 11 chapters and they all brilliantly describe God's divine attributes as well explain deep theological questions in a simple, 'down to earth' way. The chapter on "The insanity of Luther" was a personal favourite

R.C. Sproul was one of the greatest theologians of our time. All Christians must read this book! Full of biblical truth.

You can trust R.C.Sproul to write honestly, clearly and in depth. He tackles an awesome subject - the holiness of God - in a way that is both revealing and challenging. A great book on an even greater subject.

The Holiness of God by R.C. Sproul is a tremendous book that ought to be read by every Christian. The author contends the subject of God's holiness is one of the most important issues for believers to wrestle with. How one understands the character of God affects everything in life. Worship, service, or true obedience cannot take place without understanding the holiness of God. The theme is developed by defining the meaning of holiness. The author argues that holiness is more than "absolute purity" or "separateness." Rather, the deeper and primary meaning of holiness of holiness is "transcendent purity." Dr. Sproul notes the fearful and adverse reaction to what Rudolph Otto calls the "mysterious tremendum" and uses the examples of Isaiah and Martin Luther to drive his point home. The author intends the reader to not only understand God's holiness from a theological frame of reference but also challenges the reader to live a holy life before a holy God. Holiness of life is more than saying "no" to cultural taboos. Rather, holy living involves controlling the tongue, acting with integrity, and manifesting the fruit of the Spirit. The Holiness of God is a deeply God-centered book. Sproul does not side-step aspects of God that may be uncomfortable for readers to swallow, namely, the justice of God. He does a masterful job at explaining the relationship between God's justice and mercy: "God does not always act with justice. Sometimes he acts with mercy. Mercy is not justice, but it also is not injustice. Sometimes he acts with mercy. Mercy is not justice, but it also is not injustice. We may see non-justice in God, which is mercy, but we never see injustice in God." Sproul is quick to counter the typical arguments that run contrary to the portrait of God that emerges in sacred Scripture. Dr. Sproul also skillfully explains the wrath of God (a doctrine which seems to be fading from modern pulpits). In fact, I remember hearing a well-known evangelist say, "God is not angry with sinners." This popular sentiment is running rampant in our churches and must be exposed and dealt with in a frank and forthright manner. The author raises issues that cause readers to think theologically. The net result is a love for God that can only grow in the awesome light of his majesty and holiness. This is my third opportunity to read this great work, a book that will undoubtedly be in print one hundred years from now. I enjoy it more every time I read it. 5 stars.

This book just exceed my expectations. To trully know the holiness of God is the key to discover what it means to have a real christian life.

Praise God for teachers like R.C. Sproul who dedicated their lives to spreading the good news of salvation. For the soul that is moved by the Spirit of God to seek knowledge and truth about the nature of God, this book will be a blessing to you. Of course, the beloved R.C. Sproul always points back to the bible so let this book and all his other books and sermons be a guide to whosoever is looking to explore and understand scripture, and grow in faith and obedience to God. May the blessings of the almighty God rest upon you.
