This is a very good product. It is much more convenient to use for areas that need frequent access than expansion type gates. Only drawback is the need to make holes in the door moldings. But for someone who is a little handy, not a problem. The rubber foot in the middle is a great feature. It keeps the gate from swinging around when our puppy runs into it.I would have given it five stars except for one thing: The release button is difficult to operate with one hand, since there is nowhere to apply leverage. I made small modification (see photos) by attaching a small shelf bracket opposite the white release button. Hooking a finger under the bracket gives me leverage when pressing the release button with my thumb. Now I can easily latch and unlatch the gate with one hand.

Worked great for about 2 weeks... UPDATE!!
I was initially very pleased with this purchase, we installed it at the top of our steps. It's only been there for about 2 weeks and has been working beautifully. After very little use, I found last night that an entire top portion of the gate was snapped off. I am pretty upset, because I drilled holes in my floor thinking this was a long term solution. I guess not! Don't waste your time or money on this thing. I'm contacting their customer service directly to discuss a refund.UPDATE: I recently had the pleasure of working with the company to figure out how to get a replacement. I emailed yesterday afternoon and got a response VERY quickly and was told it would be forwarded on to someone who could help me. It happened to be the President and CEO Doug Gessford. I was highly impressed! He asked for the invoice, serial number and some photos of the damage. I sent that info and he responded within hours, asking some clarifying questions. He was also VERY sure to ask me to take the gate down for fear my son may be injured if we continued to use it. He was incredibly friendly and helpful, I honestly can't get over how easy he was to work with. In my last email with him, he kindly asked me to destroy the gate, so no one attempts to use it, and informed me that UPS would have a new gate to me ASAP all free of charge. He even tossed in an extra mounting kit for us so we can use the gate on two doorways that are adjoining (which is why I purchased this gate to begin with, but now we'll have extra hardware, yippee!). I am floored by the level of customer service and WILL shop with them again, based on this experience alone!!

Sad! Unfortunately
I bought this after looking at so many gates. We have an oddly shaped space and I needed something long enough that wouldn't make the space look even smaller, so the fact that it is retractable was appealing. However, I failed to realize that the center post with rubber tip for sturdiness comes with a piece that has to be screwed into the floor. We live in a carpeted apartment. We can't do that. I also didn't realize it would be such a hassle to screw into the baseboards we have. It also needs to go into an stud, apparently and we don't have two studs directly across from each other. I had high hopes for this thing but it's not going to work. Sad! Unfortunately, I ordered it five months ago to get ready for my second baby coming. With a one year old and a newborn, I literally just found all this out as I was just now getting to putting it up. To make matters worse, though it was sold as new, when we opened the package with the mounting hardware, we found two screws that were coated in drywall dust. This thing had been returned and resold without being inspected. And I think I know why they returned it.

2 YEARS and STILL GOING STRONG !!
I'm sorry I forgot to leave my review on this gate when I bought it , but this is TRULY a 5 Star Gate and here's why , We purchased this Gate 2 years ago , and while the first gate had some slight damage, the Company gave us the BEST customer service I have seen from anyone ! Not only did they help us out , they also insisted on replacing our gate and making sure we were totally satisfied with the replacement! Now for the best part - 2 YEARS later and this gate is STILL working and performing just as it did from day ONE !! We use it to keep our aging Pit Bull baby from trying to climb our 2nd floor stairs when we're not there to aid her . Let me tell you this gate gets used NON STOP and believe me when I say it's used A LOT ! We can honestly say you will have this gate for years ! PS. (the only tiny issue and its nothing to us , is the locking button is a little hard for us to use ,so we don't use it often - we use 2 eye hooks instead)

Broke within 2 weeks
UPDATE 5/28/20The Amazon return policy during covid19 was amazing- I selected the option for UPS pickup and they somehow brought a label for my item next business day. He didn't wear a mask and came right up to my front door, which freaked me out, but I had the gate wrapped up and ready for him on my porch anyway. I imagine it would feel really different if I was in an apartment and had the guy at my front door. But the new replacement came within the week so I didn't have to worry too long without a baby gate for my nearly walking child. Adding two stars for excellent customer service(OLD 5/24/20) Used 2 of these to close off my porch so my 11 month old could crawl around safely. Not too difficult to install but it's not exactly easy to use (you have to press REALLY hard on the top to get the gate latch to open, and while pressing you feel its cheapness, while pulling up for the bottom hook to detach) and in the first rainstorm, one of the lattice pieces snapped in half in the wind. One star.

Great for wide spaces, easy install
This gate has been great. I've had it since November. I have a wide opening at the bottom of my staircase and had a hard time finding something effective to block the opening. The gate opens extremely wide and has a support in the center to stabilize the gate as it's extended. Works great. It was easy to install once I threw away the instructions. I felt like they overcomplicated the instructions. I got it installed fairly quickly. It folds up pretty small compared to its size. The only issue we've had is bumping into the eye hooks on the open side. Otherwise, it latches fine. It was a little stiff the first few times, but once it broke in it was super easy.

Okay in some situations
We bought this gate for a large opening leading from hall to kitchen to keep our new puppy contained daily and our 16 month old grandson occasionally contained. Doesn't work well for grandson. Here is why: the top button is almost impossible to use as is (as other reviewers have noted). If we only use the bottom hook, he pushes that out immediately. Works most of the time for puppy. Since we have baseboard trim at the bottom of walls, it had to be installed above the trim, and that gives puppy enough space underneath to escape if motivated. Add to that the unfinished wood is not attractive at all. Bottomline, we didn't remove it and get something else, so it is okay for a while. If you don't have trim or are willing to remove it and willing to modify the top piece yourself and you don't mind the look of it, well then it is okay. Otherwise, look for something better.

Good product
I like the product. It is simple and easy to install. Quality is good, the lock is a little hard to open. I tried to install it withou doing holes and it was easy.

Nicely made gate, with some problems.
I am using the 84" version to block small pets (cats) from entering a carpeted hallway.Pros: nicely made, inexpensive, fairly easy to install.Cons:The center foot rubs on the carpet to the extent that opening/closing the gate is troublesome. I tried raising the mounting hardware higher off the floor, which helps a lot, but I can't go too high or the cats will scoot under the gate. So, if you have high pile carpeting, this product can be problematic. The upper latch is poorly designed and hard to operate (getting it engaged into the screw eye). As mentioned in other review(s), I added a bracket to the opposite side of the latch post, which helps greatly but is not a cure. There is a problem that the top of the last long spar pivots close to the bracket, which can pinch my finger. I'm too lazy to shorten that spar. Without the bracket, opening/closing the gate is uncomfortable, as the latch mechanism is the only 'handle', and the metal edges are not finger-friendly. With cats, I don't actually need to have the latch engaged, so I commonly don't bother. The bottom latch finger is a close fit, and in a dimly lit hallway, it is hard to find the spot to mate the finger with the bottom screw eye. I would be better to have a wider, but tapered, finger to engage in a larger eye; easier to find the mark.I would probably try a different brand next time.

Perfect for us
I must admit, the gate isn't the prettiest thing in the world, but it is perfect for us. I needed a longer gate to block off the stairway so my 10mo old can't climb up. Most gates didn't expand to the 7ft space I needed. This one works great at keeping her downstairs. I love how it closes back up and swings to lay flat against the wall when I don't need it up.
