Review 'Kevin Brooks just gets better and better, and given that he started off brilliant, that leaves one scratching around for superlatives' Sunday Telegraph 'He's an original. And he writes one hell of a story' - Meg Rosoff About the Author Kevin Brooks was born in Exeter and studied in Birmingham and London. He had a varied working life, with jobs in a crematorium, a zoo, a garage and a post office, before - happily - giving it all up to write books. Kevin is the author of Being, Black Rabbit Summer and Killing God for Puffin. He now lives in North Yorkshire.

Killing God
Since reading Martyn Pig, I have downloaded all of Kevin Brooks books. They are so edgy and gripping. I find some of the subjects a little distrubing and difficult to read but I think that's what make Brooks's books so compelling. I finish his books within a couple of days because I simply can't put them down. Killing God deals with abandonment, sexual abuse, bullying and violence. Dawn holds it altogether very well for someone who had been through so much. Would definitely recommend this book.

We had this book for a school project and enjoyed it. An easy read but a story with a twist! Read on kindle.

Very, very good.
Although Killing God has a somewhat strange title, the story isn't as controversial as it sounds. Religion isn't the focal point of the plot, and instead 'Killing God' refers to the solution that Dawn thinks will fix everything.Dawn is one heck of a funny character. Her thoughts and ideas (dog's names - Jesus and Mary, after the band) are witty and individual, and I loved being in her head. The narrative flows easily and fast, and I think this is largely due to Dawn's voice and personality - I couldn't wait to see how her story concluded.Killing God covers a lot of ground, and is by no means a light, fluffy novel. It deals with broken homes, alcoholism and abuse, and is exactly what you've come to expect from Kevin Brooks. His books are a joy to read, and he has a fantastic grasp on teen life, expertly writing as if he's still that age himself. He doesn't hold back, and never patronises his readers - he just tells it as it is. As it is might not always be happy and positive, but that never stops him from writing about important subjects that need to be addressed. He's a writer to watch, and I hope he continues to provide teenagers with realistic, gritty literature. Recommended.

not bad
I quite enjoyed this book. A quick read which doesn't really seem like it is going anywhere until the very end when everything finally kicks off. I must admit I did see the twist coming but not the ending. I liked the main character Dawn and could sympathese with her (although not really relate to her). Well worth the time and effort.

the language is flowing
A Young Adult fiction written in a very clever way. It deals with religious fanatics, alcoholism, depression and abuse in a straight-forward manner - all narrated by fifteen year old Dawn. The reader gets straight into her head and the language is flowing even if it's dream like and fragmented, full of quotes from the band Jesus and Mary Chain. The main plot is that Dawns dad has disappeared and she's trying to make sense of it all, wanting to kill God as it was God who drove her dad crazy ... The subplot is the unexpected visits from her cool school friends Mel and Taylor and how they make her feel about herself. It's cleverly linked to the main plot as well. The only reason I won't give the book five stars is the overly dramatic ending ...

Very likeable characters - good read.
I'm an older reader and was quite surprised to enjoy this read. I really liked the main characters and I love how Brooks used the soundtrack of the Jesus and Mary Chain...

"So how come God gets away with it?"
This is pretty heavy stuff for your average 13 year-old girl to handle. The plot involves drunken parents, an episode of child sexual abuse, drug runners at each other's throats...

Stunningly good writing
As a writer of teen fiction myself, I occasionally read other books in the genre, but only if I think I'm going to enjoy them, and I always enjoy Kevin Brooks Books.

Thoughtful, provocative and funny.
I am a 40 year old guy. I couldn't sleep the other night and picked up 'Killing god' from a pile of proofs (I used to work in a large bookstore where we get them for free).
