Mikako aims to take the world of fashion by storm but stumbles when love comes into season in this coming-of-age tale from the creator of Nana ! Welcome to Happy Berry! No, this isn’t a fruit stand, but the label dreamed up by aspiring fashion designer Mikako Koda. In her quest to make a name for herself in the fashion world, Mikako enters Yazawa Arts Academy, a prestigious art school, alongside her strictly platonic childhood friend Tsutomu. But there’s one problem—Tsutomu’s uncanny resemblance to a rock star skyrockets him to popularity and leads him to date the prettiest girl in school. Now Mikako can’t help but wonder if what she feels is jealousy. Peppy and creative teenager Mikako wants nothing more than to make it as a fashion designer. But when she enters art school alongside her lifelong friend Tsutomu, she finds herself distracted by his sudden popularity and subsequent love life. Despite her feelings, Mikako forms a club with Tsutomu and her friends to sell their creations at a local flea market. While the group is out scouting the flea market, however, discord arises between members in the group and what begins as an exciting day quickly turns sour. Review: Perfect for ParaKiss or Yazawa loyal-- as well as new readers - I've been a follower of Yazawa as long as she's been creating manga. I own all of the Nana volumes which was made easier due to the recent reprint. So I was pretty pleased when I heard that Neighborhood Story (prequel to her series Paradise Kiss) was getting a translation and English release. This edition is very well made even if it was a bit pricey-- the cover has a stylish cut out design and all of the pages look amazing. I am also a fan of the ParaKiss sequel and own that series and I had actually purchased the Japanese volume one of Neighborhood Story years ago, so it was easy to compare. This is a charming story and one of my favorites about growing up and learning to interact with others and finding your path as an artist. Highly recommend to both new readers and seasoned fans. Review: LOVEEEEEE FAVORITE SERIES EVERR - So i was in high school when i read the translated version of this series back in the 2000s and honestly after this series I read every other series Ai Yazawa created *cries because nana in incomplete* I NEVER thought we would get a translation here in 2023!! anyways if you love paradise kiss this is the prequel technically and heavily revolves around fashion :) (I love this series so much I have a tattoo of it on my right arm of Happy Berry Logo)

Finally
I cannot tell you how excited I was when I learned that this series was finally getting a licensed print release in English. I literally waited 20 years for this & I'm sure many others have a similar story. I would check every few years, on the off chance it was happening, & was floored when I saw the news. Thank you so much to everyone who helped make this happen, from the publisher, translator, editor, designer, & everyone else. From the bottom of my heart, this means so much. High school me & 34-year-old me are grateful. You've done a beautiful job.

I read the manga online a few months ago, can’t wait to have the physical versions of these now too!! The details on the book are super cute and I love the fashion in everything Ai Yazawa writes, definitely recommend if you liked paradise kiss or want an uplifting read after Nana!

Delightful manga, phenomenal print quality :)
Gorgeous new edition of a very engaging vintage shoujo manga by the author of Nana, I have seen the whole anime before I read this, and that and watching all of Nana is what made me want to pick this up, I think it is a lovely story and a bit lighter than Yazawa's other work if you want her vibe and aesthetic but not too sad, I also will say that the print quality and reproduction of the pages is some of the best I have ever seen in any printed manga volumes, I was blown away by it, and speaking as someone who is not overly keen on omnibuses and prefers hardbacks to paperbacks I do think these "volume and a half" editions of Neighbourhood Story are worth getting, what beautiful books! The diecut patterned edge French flaps are a very nice touch as well, would def recommend these, I also bought all of Last Quarter at the same time and that was amazing too, so glad to see some of her older work getting such lovely new releases :)
