Solid home surveillance system
Was about to pull the trigger on a $200 home video surveillance system, then I found a recommendation online to go with a swann system. Found this one on Amazon, looked good and the reviews seemed good so I jumped on it. Arrvied quick from Amazon. Noticed immediately that this is a well made, quality system. Nothing seemed "cheap" and it was well packaged, with DVR in one box and sets of 4 cameras in the two other boxes. Dry ran the dvr and a camera in my living room, everything seemed fine. Then I installed the DVR in a closet that has access to the attic, no problem except for the fact that I had to use a wireless access point to connect to the internet. From there I installed the cameras, running the cable through the attic to points outside my home. This is probably the hardest part of the install. I recommend getting a fish tape to help pulling the cables. Once you get the cable outside you can "dry fit" the cameras from the rough to exact locations. Using the Iphone app I could test place the camera and see exactly what I would get. The articulation on the base of each camera takes a little getting used to, but by the time you're on your second camera it's pretty much old hat. Expect to tweak the cameras at least a couple of times after mounting to get the right location. Video is crisp, but no way it's HD. I access the dvr using iOS and Windows apps. Haven't completely figured it out yet, but seems pretty easy to configure. I have to find the sweet spot on notifications though. It hits my iphone way too much when the leaves on a tree move or the dog goes outside. Bottom line is that this is a solid system, easily worth the $300 cost. And it looks like it'll do the job for a long time.

Works with my old Night Owl cables and cameras
Super easy setup, especially considering my story. I bought a whole new set of cameras because my discontinued Night Owl DVR was on the fritz and it was time to upgrade. My fear was I would not be able to use the existing cables and would have to go back into the attic of doom to run the wires. Turns out, despite Swann's refusal to guide you regarding compatibility, the Night Owl wires DO WORK (same connectors, obviously), but more than that, my old heat/motion sensor cameras also work with the Swan DVR and look just fine. I laughed when I saw Swann claim each camera as a Swann device. Which makes me think they are all made in the same factory and white labeled, perhaps. But I digress.... Not every model of camera will work with every DVR, but in my case they did work no problems (yet), so maybe it's the Swann tech rep's job just to tell you "no" and steer you toward company products.I also wanted to say that the company declined to give me a credit against a large price drop that occurred within two or three weeks from my purchase. They have the right to do that, but you should know that they are going to say "too bad" if you expect that kind of accommodation. Helps you know the way the company does business.

Good For The Price
For the record, my brother has been installing home security systems, surveillance systems and other low voltage systems for 23 years. While he says he personally wouldn't have bought an inexpensive "kit" such as this, he did help me install it with his professional touch, though I'm certain I could have accomplished it myself. With his equipment, we were able to feed the cables from under the eves outside, through the attic and down through the wall of my bedroom. The cables exit the wall through a slotted wall plate to tidy up the bundle to keep it all neat.We decided to use the bedroom TV because if I ever heard anything unusual outside, I can easily switch the input channel on the TV to see the video feeds without having to get out of bed or turn on any interior lights. He also complimented me on buying a hard wired system vs a wireless due to the wired system being more reliable, safe (can't hack a wired system) and less maintenance.A professional grade system of comparable size through his supplier at his cost would have run $600-$1200. I wasn't willing to fork out that much. The cameras in this Swann kit are made by Toshiba...which makes pretty decent electronics. My home is a 1660 sq ft single story on a slab. 60ft of cable didn't sound like it was going to be enough, but it easily was. The programming part of the setup is a little confusing...which is why I could only give 4 stars. Visiting the product manufacturer's website answered a few questions, but I had to dig to find those answers. The video quality exceeded my expectations...even the night vision is very good and clear enough to recognize a face some 40ft away. My brother (the professional) gave this system a thumbs up for what I paid, though he said he prefers a "Power over Ethernet" type hardwired camera system as that's what all the high end commerical grade systems are. This is still a good system. At the end of the day, I am pleased with this Swann Security Camera system. The big question is how long will the components last without any issues or failures?

The best one can expect for this price range
This is my second Swaan unit. My last $300/4 1080p camera unit lasted 5 years before giving up... this one has significant upgraded cameras (although colors get washed out in higher light levels), details can be seen that the previous high res cameras can't display. I am currently using only 2 of the new cameras and all 4 from the previous system and love the improvements.I also like that i have enough storage to record a couple cameras 24x7 so a complete record is available something my old system couldn't do due to lack of storage.Trival imho my only complaint is that the brain is a little noisy even compared to my desktop computer's multiple fans.
