Yes, you can purchase the timer separately. I think up to 4 can work on 1 hub

Can I use a second access points to enhance coverage?

One or more sprinkler valves connect to a bluetooth gateway. The gateway connects to a wifi access point. It can have an alternate WiFi network added. I have not done this, but it's possible that the alternate network could connect to a different access point on the same network. Not sure why you need this -- the gateway must be located within bluetooth range of the valve -- I don't know the limit -- mine is 20' away. I have another valve on the other side of the house -- for that, I installed a second gateway, connected to the same access point as the other one.
