Pleasantly surprised!
I was not expecting this to work as well as it does! I had some experience with military FLIR equipment in the last so I know roughly how this stuff works and what kind of images you can expect; from multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars(at the time) vehicle mounted units. I was very happy to find this far less costly little hand held gives very sharp image quality in such a compact package. I was in my back yard being able to make out very small details in the terrain around me. So much so that I could easily navigate the forest behind my house in extreme dark during a moonless night away from any artificial light. It picked up small animals from what I would have thought to be impossible distances. It’s very sensitive, but not invincible. Looking out at the bug zapper on my porch the glass blocked being able to see it. Going out on the porch the zapper, lit alone with no other porch lighting, was like a lighthouse. Looking back thought the dining room window was a blank into a fairly well lit room. The glass simply washes out any heat signature inside or out depending on where you are. I have used all manner of NVGs and other night optics going back to the old school Starlight scopes and for the money this a better fit for farm use for me. Sure, the new PVS equipment is actually far better, but I don’t have that kind of money, especially seeing my purpose in this is to see if it’s the raccoon or the bear trying to get at my chickens or if some tweaker is lurking my barn. It would be awesome if I could get a hands free mount for this.

really disappointed in FLIR on this...
FLIR is the best in the business for *commercial and military* thermal cameras. This is not one of those. This consumer camera is absolute trash by comparison to other US manufacturers and here's why: -The refresh rate of 8 Hz makes it unusable for my purposes, and frankly, unusable as handheld monocular. -Humans/deer sized objects are blobs/smears at 50 yds, the rated 100 yd range is a joke. From a tripod, maybe 75 yds but it doesnt have a tripod mount -_- -Ita straight up useless in bright sunlight outside. Solar reflection blows out and confuses the image almost ever time, I'm not sure if this is bad processing, but it also doesn't look like this model has a second photosensor so I don't even think it tries... -Oldschool wire-only interface. No live view via wifi on your phone or computer, you'll need to buy some kind of Component to USB cable I'm told. You'll also need to plug it in to retrieve videos, otherwise they can only be watched through the viewer. Bottom line: For LESS MONEY you can get the AGM Asp Micro 160, which has the same sensor resolution (160x120) but better refresh rate (20 Hz vs. 8 Hz). For THE SAME MONEY you can get the AGM Taipan TM-10 256, which has a bigger sensor (256 x 192) and a better refresh rate (20 Hz vs 8 Hz). FLIR, you guys are better than this.

Despite being "budget", still a fairly good product.
I've had this for a few months now, and I'm fairly happy with it. I was hoping for solid thermal info from at least 10 yards. This'll do about 5 yards. While not acceptable for the original intended use, it is still one the best purchases I've made, despite the lack of updates, info, and frequest "recalibrations". Much like a bright UV flashlight in the dark will show the areas you haven't cleaned well enough, this shows where all the air leaks are around doors, windows, walls, etc. Other uses will likely arise over time. It's a bit expensive for such a base level, low-end device, though I trust the FLIR name and reputation. I hope they produce an update that increases the performance in the very near future, though it looks like it may no longer be supported by them.

Entry level
I know it's a low end model, but am still disappointed in it's resolution. And I'm disappointed in something else that I'm not sure I can articulate, but I'll try... If I look at some trees, and ground, with very little sky, What I see is very different from what I see if I tip it up a little to include more sky. The temperature colors you see are relative to the other objects in view. I bought it to learn about thermal cheaply. And to detect animals or people when it's dark. It does that fairly well. Within a modest distance. It will tell you if something warm is by that sound you just heard. But you may not be able to tell what it is. Anyway, on sale it was affordable and got me introduced to thermal.

Works Perfect!
The Flir tkx works as described, Once you read the instructions, and adjust the device to your preference, it works perfectly around 100 yards. Overall this is a great unit that works for only $300.

Good night vision not telescopic
FLIR makes great equipment but this has no increase in vision. For the price it should have more range. Note: Expensive purchases on Amazon are not refunded sooner than 30 days even if it is delivered back to its original location.

Rocks!! Get one if you can afford it!
I completely love this, I just wish it was cheaper! I was going to buy a second one but price went up 100.00 bucks. I use this in law enforcement and recommend anyone in law enforcement, emergency service to buy one at least! This product is worth it while searching for people in the woods.

Not too shabby
I got this from BF sale for almost half off the regular price. The refresh rate is bad but within my expectation. This new model has a lot less parasitic battery drain compared to the old TK model I read from reviews.

Excellent thermal imaging.
An excellent piece of equipment very reasonably priced. It performs exactly as promised !! On a cold evening it can pick up thermal signature of individual people at around 200 meters (probably at even longer ranges). Highly recommended !
