Can i get rid of my bt smart hub 2 and replace it with the ax5400?

Not quite. You still need the BT Smart Hub for the broadband link, but can turn off the Wifi in the Smart Hub and use this Wifi hub Instead, connected via Ethernet to the Smart Hub - that's what I do, with a couple of extenders (TP-Link AC-2600). Gives great results and solid signal. With the extenders, you can e.g. put one next to your TV and plug the TV ethernet into the extender and have it connect over WiFi to the main unit, all works well.
