There are no directions with the filter. The pictures on the product page say to install the filter with the stainless steel mesh (last stage) face up, but the pictures show the holes on the plastic, near the last stage, as being face up. If you look at the stages as numbered in their pictures showing each stage, the water should start at the holes and exit at the steel mesh, which lines up with the single O-ring. Their pictures here refer to 3 O-rings. So I've had the last one in backwards. Great. Nothing prevents you from putting it in backwards. It shouldn't require so much analysis. There are competing products with better reviews here, so why be so sloppy about something like this?

My hair had turned a light orange color from hard water. Although I had to grow out the orange, I have not had any repeated incidence of any coloring in my nearly white hair since installing this filter over a year ago. The only feature I'd really like is being able to know when to change the filter. Although they recommend six to eight months or 10,000 to 12,000 gallons, I can't figure out how many showers it would take one person showering daily to achieve that many gallons!
