Slow, brutal at times but rather good too!
This is a strange film lasting over two hours to tell a simple story but I rather liked it. There are lots of holes in the plot, there are times it is obviously filmed on a low budget and the end feels a bit contrived but I really enjoyed it. There has been a murder and two people abducted in a small western town including the wife of Arthur O'Dwyer (Patrick Wilson) and a small posse rides out to get them back led by Sherriff Franklin Hunt (Kurt Russell). The characters in the posse start off as caricatures with the duty bound sheriff, the grieving husband, the old timer deputy and the flash gunslinger. However lot of the film sets up their characters giving them motivation and manages to avoid obvious clichés to the point when they reach the final designation you really care about them. This is a horror western and an old school one without CGI which in some ways makes it more brutal. It does not feel gratuitous though in the context of the film. However when they finally find the missing wife Samantha (Lili Simmons) she does look far too fragrant and made up after being captive by savages for at least 3 days!I really enjoyed this film, it is easy to pick holes in the plot but you forgive it due to the time invested in the characters.

Not quite what it's reputation suggests...
Bone Tomahawk is a film that I had only heard of due to it's reputation. It's known for being an intense gory film. Being a western too, I really had to check this film out. What I found was that Bone Tomahawk isn't quite what people made it out to be.The film was released in 2015, was written and directed by S. Craig Zahler. It features a pretty entertaining cast including Kurt Russell, Patrick Wilson and Matthew Fox. The plot of the movie is fairly basic and easy to follow. A quiet little western town suffers a series of murders and kidnappings at the hands of some terrifying cannibals. Kurt Russell and company take it upon themselves to retrieve those who were kidnapped. Those looking for a terrifying splatter movie as advertised might be a little disappointed. The vast majority of Bone Tomahawk is the development of characters on their journey and very little action or horror. By that, I mean it's kind of uneventful and slow. On the bright side, the dialogue is very well done. I found that each of the four main characters brought a lot of personality to their given roles with the interaction between them on their journey is more than entertaining. The film does pick up on the last quarter or so and this is where its reputation comes from. This portion of the film is highly entertaining and it IS as gory as people make it out to be. But it's not the meat of the story. As a film, the Bone Tomahawk features some beautiful set pieces and shines as a technical achievement. The environments the characters traverse looks beautifully golden and brown. It's all very natural looking. These colours all pop out of the screen with the high quality image on the bluray. It's a very clear and extremely sharp disc. It makes for a fantastic viewing in terms of visual quality.Bone Tomahawk is (in my opinion) a very good movie. It's by no means perfect and has a reputation that suggests it's something that it is not. It's a good solid western with some good characters and a few but well deserved scares.

Love the western/horror genre
I sat through the first 10 minutes or so of this film and have to admit, I didn't like it that much. I was snacking ( and nothing interrupts motion of food to mouth in my case) during which I was thinking about moving on to something else. Gradually I realised I was actually enjoying it and was drawn in by some realistic costume designs and western scenery. Honestly, at one point I could almost taste the dust (once I'd finished my crisps of course). Other than the western/horror mix, which I'm beginning to love, Kurt Russell was the thing that drew me to the film. He's made some exceptional horrors and westerns. Big Trouble in Little China, The Thing, Tombstone etc. What a fantastic actor he is, and has been since childhood, solid and exceptionally talented. Few actors 'feel' a character and bring them to life in the way that he does.Anyone looking for a slasher horror or thinking that this has got horrific and constant bloodletting all the way through will be disappointed. This is all about building characters and slowly (painfully so at times) building the suspense. The horror scenes are graphic and realistic as are the trogladites but I can understand why some people wanted a bit more. One thing I would say, was that there just wasn't enough for the female lead to do and I agree with one reviewer who said that she didn't look tatty, or at least worn out enough, after being held captive for so long. Having said that, the acting was strong, character build up interesting and Richard Jenkins, who played Chichory gave Kurt Russell a good run for his money for best actor in this. Very good and a film that stays with you after it's over. Give it a go if you want something different.

Good western with horror elements. Slow burner with a gruesome final 30 minutes.
4 men set out to rescue some folk taken by a group of cave dwelling troglodytes. An offbeat western with some gruesome scenes. The acting is pretty good, Kurt Russell always looks good in westerns. Towards the end there are a couple of scenes that would not look out of place in Cannibal Holocaust. I like the way this builds up to the end confrontation. The scenery is excellent and the production values are high for what is clearly quite a low budget film. There are some flaws in logic along the way and its too long but this is well worth watching especially if you have a strong stomach. Nice to see some familiar faces like Sid Haig and David Arquette among the supporting cast. A good solid film.

Saludos
