NadPP 4 - audio amplifiers (RCA)

I have now used this unit with both a moving magnet and a moving coil cartridge and the performance of this little box is great on both types with low noise, low distortion and a good balance. The USB output capable of providing a digital link to PC or Mac is the icing on the cake.

I bought this unit to record the odd track off my vinyl album collection (from my MC cartridge on a Dunlop Systemdek) where I didn't also have a digital copy and it appeared to work ok for such one off use, albeit I found a mismatch between the PP4 and my Yamaha AV amp's phono input such that I had to use an audio level input instead, and even at that, at a higher volume level than I would normally have to employ.However, when I tried to record an entire album, the unit produced heavy distortion and a reducing level after around 16 minutes. Switching the unit off and on, or waiting a few minutes, removed the distortion, only for it to return a few minutes later.On googling for this fault, I noticed reviews on amazon.com from users who had experienced the exact same issue. I have therefore contacted the supplier (and NAD themselves) with a view to returning the unit and purchasing a preamp (but which one?) from another manufacturer.Shame - when it worked, it actually sounded pretty good...** Update: Supplier (Silveroaks) agreed to swap out unit in only one day - excellent service, so agreed to give the replacement unit another go. Fingers-crossed...** update 2: replacement unit working without problems and sounds good into the bargain. Actually made me set up record deck as permanent fixture again...

I now have 2 of these in my system setup. One functions as phono stage, one as line level/ usb output stage.Both of the above applications work perfectly, as they were designed to do.Cannot say enough about how versatile and compact these units are.Also, super fast delivery, thanks

Great bit of kit!Using it on a Mac in co-ordination with the recommended software (Vinyl Studio) and have been listening to albums I haven't heard in a long time! Does what it's supposed to and does it well.

Only used to route a turntable through to audio equipment without a preamp so far and it was great to hear the rich sound quality of vinyl again. The sound quality from this amp is excellent at a reasonable price and would recommend it as a good alternative for equipment that only has a line input.

The hardware supplied is just the job. However the Vinyl Studio software is out-of-date, doesn't work properly with Windows 10, it's a windows 7 version. You need to go to the Alpine Soft website to get it updated. I've done a couple of prerecorded reel to reel tapes with very good results.

A day or so ago I added the note below that starts "I'm not reviewing this as I have yet to purchase it......" everything there is still valid except that I have now purchased and had the PP4 delivered. Connecting up was a doddle even if I wasn't familiar with it by virtue of having the similar PP2e already. I have encountered no problems with this device and it does exactly what it should. I have installed "VinylStudio" (full version) and tested that and it also works as it should. So, I'm very happy to recommend this device. Just ensure that as below, you do NOT connect the pre amp to the phono input of an amp. The phono input already has a pre amp and can damage your equipment. Use an aux or other line in input instead. One small point to bear in mind also, it would probably be best NOT to connect the power plug to the mains supply until AFTER you have plugged in the power cord to the device. I didn't and noted a small arcing as a result. Despite that, there are no issues.I'm not reviewing this as I have yet to purchase it and will do very soon, however I have the PP2. DO NOT connect these to a phono input on your amp. The phono input amplifies the signal which is what the amp does so you are overdoing it. It can damage your amp and or speakers. A phono input leads to an on board pre amp so it would further boost the input level. Connect the PP4 to an aux or line input instead. Persons getting distortion when connecting to a phono input, this is your problem. 5 stars is based on the PP2e without the USB facility but it's essentially the same. This is the way these are meant to work and is not a fault.

Lo utilizzo per ascoltare musica con giradischi e passare un po di tempo per soddisfare la passione per hi fi.Nella prima prova d un paio di lp sono rimasto soddisfatto, ascolto piacevole ma la prova è stata un po pochino ci risentiamo.

Utilisé avec une platine Garrard 401 très bonne qualité , dommage qu'il reste toujours en veille .......pas de position marche arrêt complet , c'est vrais que la led rouge ne consomme pas grand chose

Da ich einige sehr schöne klassische Aufnahmen auf LP besitze und diese Aufnahmen auch gerne in guter Qualität auf CD verfügbar haben möchte, stieß ich auf den NAD PP4, der mir auch von Bekannten für diese Zwecke empfohlen wurde. Das Gerät wurde auf Amazon Marketplace bestellt und wurde rasch geliefert. Das Gerät war wohlverpackt und enthielt neben dem NAD PP4 ein USB Kabel, das Steckernetzteil und eine Mini-CD. Eine Beschreibung suchte ich vergeblich, jedoch sagen die Abbildungen auf der Verpackung alles über die Anschlussmöglichkeiten aus. Die mini DVD konnte ich nicht in meinem externen MAC CD/DVD-Laufwerk einlegen, jedoch lässt sich die Software auch via Internet vom Hersteller laden. Das Programm ist selbsterklärend und ich kam rasch damit zurecht. Ich verwende das Signal vom Vorverstärker kommend an den beiden entsprechend gekennzeichneten Buchsen. Die Einstellungen von Clipping, etc. sind leicht zu bewältigen und gut durchdacht, ebenso das Starten der Aufnahme. Die Software bietet einige Feinheiten, die ich noch nicht alle genutzt habe. Das nachfolgende Brennen von CDs ist dank des selbsterklärenden Menues einfach und die Aufnahmequalität hat mich positiv überrascht. Würde ich sofort wieder kaufen.

Wie immer pünktlich geliefert und bestens verpackt. Alles i.O. wie gewohnt. Dies vorab.DerNAD PP4 ist ein Vorverstärker und Analog/Digitalwandler, um Schallplatten zu digitalisieren. Er verstärkt und entzerrt das Signal eines Plattenspielers mit MM oder MC Pickups, wandelt es in ein Digitalsignal um und stellt es an einer USB-Buchse zur Verfügung. Das aufbereitete analoge Signal wird zugleich auch an zwei Cinch-Buchsen zur Verfügung gestellt. Außerdem kann noch ein weiteres Gerät mit Line-Pegel an zwei Cinchbuchsen angeschlossen und mit einem Schiebeschalter gewählt werden. Der Ausgangspegel ist regelbar, die Betriebsbereitschaft wird mit zwei LEDS signalisiert. Nach Anschluss des externen Netzteils befindet sich das Gerät sofort in Standby. Mit einem Drucknopf wird es endgültig eingeschaltet, kann aber nicht mehr gezielt ausgeschaltet werden. Es wird nach einer gewissen Zeit ohne Pegel an den Eingängen automatisch abgeschaltet. Die Beschriftung der Anschlüsse ist einwandfrei, die Verkabelung kinderleicht, das USB-Kabel liegt bei.Ich betreibe den PP 4 mit einem altehrwürdigen DUAL Plattenspieler mit elektronisch geregeltem Direktantrieb und einem MC ("Moving Coil") System von Ortofon, bei dem der Nadelträger nicht tauschbar und das Ausgangssignal besonders schwach ist. Dafür liefert aber ein solches System besonders fein auflösende Höhen bei kräftigen Bässen. An die Qualität eines Entzerrer-Vorverstärkers werden hohe Ansprüche gestellt. PC-seitig ist der PP 4 über USB 3,0 mit einem Büro-PC unter Windows 7 64-bit verbunden.Der NAD wird bei der Installation erkannt, ein Ton lässt sich aber erst durch weitere Einstellungen im Systemordner entlocken. Die mitgelieferte Software hat nicht meinen Vorstellungen entsprochen, ich verwende lieber Audacity.Nun ist man gespannt wie denn diese Anordnung klingt...tiefe Enttäuschung zuerst, denn es entfaltet sich mit zunehmender Lautstärke ohne Nutzsignal ein dichter Rauschpegel und einige andere unschöne Nebengeräusche. Man denkt an einen Defekt. In dem Moment aber, in dem die Nadel die Schallplatte berührt und ein Nutzsignal am Eingang anliegt herrscht sofort Stille und es wird ein wunderbarer Sound geliefert, glasklar, dabei nie scharf sondern leicht schwebend bei pulstreuen und kräftigen Bässen. So wunderschön habe ich den alten Dual noch nie spielen gehört! Ob diverse Klassik oder "Babylon by Bus" von Bob Marley, odere eine original "Weiße" LP von den Beatles, alles klingt einfach begeisternd. Zusammen mit Audacity konnten problemlos hervorragende digitale WAV-Files brennreif für Audio-CDs erzeugt werden, woran auch die erstklassige "Knacks-weg"-Funktion der Software einen gewissen Anteil hatte... Wer es platzsparender mag oder kleinere Klangeinbußen hinnimmt speichert die Files als mp3 ab. Dies ist allerdings schon eine unfeine Maßnahme, das wunderschöne Signal zu komprimieren und damit zu kompromittieren. Ich bringe das nicht übers Herz.Wer also mit diesem sehr seltsamen Rauscheffekt, der im digitalen Endprodukt definitiv nicht zu hören ist, leben kann, der bekommt für sein Geld ein ganz erstklassiges Instrument zum hochwertigen Digitalisieren seiner Plattensammlung.Zum Schluss noch ein Wort zum Service: Den habe ich natürlich kontaktiert, weil dieses Rauschen schon sehr unüblich ist und ich einen Defekt vermutete. Der Support des Händlers war wirklich ganz ausgezeichnet, freundlich und kompetent und nach mehreren angeleiteten Tests wurde das Gerät problemlos umgetauscht. Das neue Gerät ist aber leider wie das alte, es scheint sich hier um ein konstruktives Problem der Modellreihe zu handeln. Ich habe ja diesen automatischen Abschaltprozess im Verdacht, aber das konnte nicht geklärt werden. Ich behalte das Gerät trotzdem und freue mich nun über jede digitalisierte Platte und einen ganz fantastischen Klang von CD.

Avevo la necessità di un pre-fono da accoppiare ad un amplificatore vintage (con un buono stadio finale ma un pessimo stadio di preamplificazione) che permettesse una discreta qualità di riproduzione. Inoltre ero interessato all'uscita USB per poter digitalizzare i miei vinili. Questo pre-fono, possiede le caratteristiche desiderate (in una fascia di prezzo ragionevole). Il prodotto è dotato del software "VinylStudio Lite" (upgradabile) per la digitalizzazione (in lingua Inglese ma di semplice impiego). La confezione contiene il mini CD per l'installazione, un cavo USB e l'alimentatore. Forse definirlo High End è un po' eccessivo, tuttavia, mi ritengo soddisfatto dei risultati ottenuti.
