A four-part BBC mini series based on the novel by Michel Faber, The Crimson Petal and the White is set in Victorian London. At the heart of it is Sugar, a young prostitute on the lookout for a better life. Her path crosses with that of William Rackham, a businessman with no small measure of success, and events soon begin to spiral out of control. Sugar might just have a way out. Inevitably, the screen adaptation diverges from the exact plot of the book, but the quality of the screenwriting here is genuinely excellent. Added to that, the production values stretch the budget far beyond the norm. It’s a captivating drama. Spread across four episodes, The Crimson Petal and the White feels like a labour of love for those involved, not least the terrific cast. Headlining here are Romola Garai, brilliant as Sugar, and The I.T. Crowd’s Chris O’Dowd. In supporting roles, you’ll easily spot Richard E. Grant and Gillian Anderson, too. Overall, it’s a fine piece of work. The story is interesting, the adaptation is strong, and the execution of it very good indeed. And best of all, it shines a light on a terrific piece of literature, that deserves a wider audience. Both the book and TV series are both worth a purchase. --Jon Foster

Absolutely Superb
The novel is unrivalled (well, so I feel!). Delving into its pages is tantermount to indulging in a candlelit glass or three of rich red wine. Others may disagree, but I found it such an addictive experience that it's now firmly lodged as my Number One.When the BBC series arrived I was very excited, but a tad concerned that it may fall prey to the usual book-to-series disease. It did not. With such material to work with I did wonder if the novel's delectably dark atmosphere could effectively be recreated for audiences to swallow - especially given some of the more graphic couplings depicted found therein! Of course it can never match the detail and imagination of such a book, but what it did do extremely effectively, was to take chunks of the book and totally convert them to screen. A fat story like this cannot be covered in its full form in four episodes, but it was so well done that any disappointment that little details were not included (like Agnes's visit to Folkestone, for example) were overcome and consoled. Also I wondered at changing perverted Dr Curlew from Mrs Fox's father to her brother, but that is not even a complaint. Frankly the period is so vividly brought to life that a visit to London will never seem the same again!I'm so glad that I purchased this DVD, I've watched it three times on the trot and only had it for two weeks.FABULOUS!

Gave it to a charity shop
I love costume dramas but neither I nor my friend liked it and beither of us watched all if the series. It is quite a dark story, including sexual exploitation and sexual abuse of women and not the usual costume drama escapism; that probably why we didn't enjoy it.

OK but too much of the books detail not included
I absolutely loved the book and so was excited to see how it was interpreted for TV. Unfortunately I think they miss far too much out and the series should have been longer. I honestly think if I hadn’t read the book I wouldn’t have quite got what was going on. That said the production quality is very good but read the book rather than watching the show.

An excellent production
This is an excellent series that doesn't hold back on some of the seedier aspects of life in Victorian London. We were hooked from the beginning.

Good in Parts
An interesting interpretation of a book. That said it takes liberties with the books story. The series itself if interesting but I did not care for the style of photography, kind of surreal in places.

Well produced
I found this series a bit disturbing at times, but very compelling. An interesting story from an interesting angle. Top quality production which really draws you in to the extremely unpleasant situation and roles that many women were trapped in at the time. This is not for the faint hearted wanting to watch a feel good, period drama but by the end of it I was really rooting for Sugar and indeed nearly all the women in the story. If there's a moral to this women's story I would say it is, be extremely careful what you wish for and always have an escape plan.

Excellent
Wow, I'm rather surprised at the BBC as it says this was shown on telly! It must of been on after 9:00 O'clock as its rather runchie the book even more so. I loved it. Love the main character! Some nice twists and turns, great story. I would definitely say to buy the book as well and read that first then watch the DVD.Rather strange title to be honest but don't let that put you off. Fantastic acting for all, great, definitely buy it especially if you like your period drams to be true to life. Expect it be gritty in parts. Enjoy.

A super watch.
Absolutely fantastic series. It's brilliantly shot and the dark, dangerous and unsavoury streets of London are very well emulated. The story is gripping and the music is fantastic - it's very eerie in places and unconventional, matching the mood of the drama quite effectively. It's quite explicit in parts, so be warned - if you're prudish, it's probably not the drama for you. That said, it's an eye-opener to the life of Victorian London which we might normally look at through rose-tinted glasses. The acting is superb and it's refreshing to see Chris O'Dowd in a non-comical role; he does a brilliant job.
