Is the leather piece in middle removable?

Yes, it is just a stip of leather with a button.

I can only use fake / faix / synthetic leather. - Are these actual animals? Genuine leather or manmade?

I don't know for certain. Nothing came with the package stating genuine leather and the side shields appear to be faux leather, especially on the inside that touches the skin. I've had other glasses with real leather side shields and these are not at all like those.
