Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell [DVD]

Gorgeous1960s film, with the lovely Gina Lollobrigida. The story centres round the 3 American GIs who were in Italy during the war, all of whom could potentially be the father of Gina's daughter. Wonderful stars like Phil Silvers, Peter Lawford, Shelley Winters and Telly Savalas add to the fun. Have waited a long time to get this on DVD and although it is from Spain, the original English soundtrack is there - though you could watch it dubbed in Spanish as well.

A riotous comedy starring Gina Lollobrigida, Telly Savalas, and many others. In wartorn Italy a glamorous woman has affairs with several US servicemen whom she later claims are the father or her child. Unbeknown to each other, the men agree to send maintenance payments to support what they believe is their offspring. Many years later things come to a head when a re-union is organised in the Italian town where the men served.........

One of my favourite films. Yes, Mama Mia was based on the idea in this, it is acknowledged. I have owned a video cassette copy from TV for many years and was pleased to be able to buy a DVD version at last. Spanish origin was no problem, English version easily navigated. However: picture quality is very poor, blurring on close-ups and difficulty in making out some background features,colours look unnatural (especially when compared with the VCR) to the extent that I wondered if I had been sold a pirated copy, but apparently not. Don't buy, wait until its on TV then download it for a decent reproduction

This is a very funny and amusing little film made in the Sixties, wonderful farce and brillant and funny acting from all the casts, especially my favorite Gina Lollobrigida. She is brilant in this film, with also the marvelous Shirley Winters, Lee Grant, Phil Silver, Peter Lawford and Telly Savalas all fantastic and beautifully shot somewhere in Italy ( Bela ) The only downside is that the pictures quality is not as brillant as it should be, wish it would would be release in better quality than this. I have seen it on TV not so long ago and the quality was much better, hence only 3 stars. Awaiting for the better one on release and hope not too long please...

Saw this film in the cinema when it first came out and thought it was great. After seeing stage show of Mamma Mia I was struck by the similarity to 'buena sera mrs campbell' and tried to source the DVD. The film is now very dated and the picture quality isn't great but I loved it, probably more for nostalgia than any other reason

It's a favourite film and we were delighted to be able to find it. It came from czech.out and was delivered quickly and came beautifully packaged, and included a postcard of the Czech location it was sent from plus had very good instructions in English so that we could watch without the Czech subtitles. Very pleased.

Super comedy film. We have it on vhs. Great to get it on dvd. Have watched it twice in last 3 weeks. Super..

I liked it.

This is a wonderfully delightful 1968 comedy about an Italian woman who didn't know which of three American Service airmen got her pregnant so she decided to take unending monthly cheques from each of them without their knowing of each other. This all goes well for twenty years until there is a Reunion, causing a whirlwind of confusion and a lot of fast car driving before ending on a touching, fatherly note. Although the premise might be considered seedy and some of the story twists a little sad, the movie is played on an innocent note with lots of upbeat music and beautiful Italian scenery that create a perfect holiday picture. The plot was also the original inspiration to the plot in the "Mama mia" movie.

Campbell, interpretada por una bellísima Gina Lollobrigida rodeada de un amplio elenco de cómicos de Hollywood. Como curiosidad también aparece como actríz de reparto Naomi Stevens a quien los fans de Billy Wilder recordaran como la esposa del médico que aparece en El Apartamento. A quienes deseen pasar un buen y divertido rato les recomiendo esta película.

It may not have3 the music of ABBA, but Buona Sera, Mrs. Campbell has much better writing, acting, and directing. It is essentially the same story. Gina Lollabridida is an Italian girl from a beautiful mountain village who finds comfort with three different American soldiers, played by Phil Silvers, Peter Lawford, and Telly Savalas. A few days after they all leave, she discovers that she is pregnant. Not knowing which is the father, she goes to Paris to have the baby. She invents a husband and father for the baby, a non-existent American flyer. Needing a name for the flyer, she only knows two American names, Coca-Cola and Campbell Soup. Thus, she chooses to become Mrs. Campbell, the widow of an American hero.She does contact each of the three possible fathers, and each thinks that only he is the father. Each is married, although only one has children, Phil Silvers. Each of the three sends her a monthly check for the next twenty years which she uses to rear Gia Campbell, their daughter.Her problem arises when the squadron holds its twenty year reunion in the Italian village that they had loved so much. Each of the fathers returns, along with their unsuspecting wives, to meet their daughter. The deception is finally revealed, but not without the humor that only LOllabrigida can bring to a role. As the most underrated comic actress of her generation, she entertains in any comic situation and somehow makes it seem believable.How a twenty-year deception can lead to such a heart=warming conclusion as each continues to hope that he is the father, knowing that the other "fathers" exist, is the product of some good writing. This story needs no music to be among the better comedies of the twentieth century. It has what a movie should have, acting and writing.
