Comprehensive
For anyone who is a fan of the famous film, this is a must. It contains just about anything you could ever wish to know about the film, from the initial idea through to the final release and beyond. It is full of pictures, anecdotes and personal histories: I particularly liked the brief biographies of some of the actors as it answers the question, "I wonder whatever happened to ....?" You can even find out how much the actors were paid for their efforts. It's written with clarity and enthusiasm by an obvious fan of the film, but he is still prepared to take on the critics with reasoned and honest argument. For someone like me who first saw Zulu over 50 years ago as an impressionable young lad, it was a real trip down memory lane.

Essential reading for Zulu fans
This is a in depth view of making of the film Zulu, it may be to revealing for many, as now on watching the film you look out for things mentioned that you may not of even have thought of (i.e. silver fillings in teeth ) and other such details. We bought the Blu-ray version DVD as well as the first version, and its outstanding quality in HD and this book makes it so much more fun to watch. would recommend it.Will make you an expert on the film, great talking point at parties I should imagine ! turns you into a anorak .Zulu [Blu-ray] [1964]

What a great read
Loved it from start to finnish, well documented with some great facts, stories about how it all came together. Some real surprising details on costs...how they made a few hundred look like thousands, what made Stanely pick that one song, the problems they had to over come filming in Africa and how half the cast (like Hook) didn't even get to Africa. All in all a facinating book, one I shall read many times.

great book about a great movie
I first saw this movie in the theater as a kid and loved it, even though it was a bit violent (for its day). I still love it and watch it whenever I come across it on the TV. I think it is Stanley Baker's finest film. Michael Caine is pretty good too. But without a doubt, my hero of the film is Nigel Green as Colour Sargent Bourne. Green nailed it as the gruff but urbane NCO of the defenders. This 'making of the' book wasn't as in depth as modern films that document every phase of the filming, but it still has interesting vignettes of the cast and production. If you enjoyed the film, you will enjoy this book.

How good is this!
If you like the movie as much as I do this book is essential. Thoroughly interesting and informative, fantastic photos and a great read - with some guts behind it. You'll be back viewing Zulu yet again with even more appreciation.

THE BRITISH ALAMO! -co-starring ALFIE and not the DUKE!
Of course the real star both in front of the camera and behind it in Sheldon Hall's book, is actor Stanley Baker. Not a household name in America, but one who was certainly a presence in Britain. Enough that is, to personally get this exspensive epic into production. Together with writer-producer-director partner Cy Endfield, they had just as much trouble making the 1964 Paramount release "Zulu", as John Wayne had in filming his version of "The Alamo" four years earlier. Hall is certainly one dedicated "Zulu" movie buff and it shows in his exhaustive research and attention to detail in this book. It's everything you ever wanted to know about the movie and the real event at Rorke's Drift, South Africa in 1879. When a mere 150 soldiers of the British Army, were forced to take on over 4,000 Zulu warriors.Stanley Baker sadly never achieved international stardom, but a young "pre-Alfie" Michael Caine was introduced to the world in this film -without the cockney accent though. Indeed, this is a good-read, well illustrated with script pages, shooting schedules and set designs etc. I remember myself seeing "Zulu" on it's first release in London, at my local ABC cinema and the place was packed. A schoolboy's dream of an action picture and it was British produced, well American Joseph E. Levine did help to get it financed...
