Pilot Hi-Tec-C 04 Gel Ink Pen, Ultra Fine Point 0.4mm, Blue Ink, LH-20C4, Value Set of 5

I write small. Therefore, I love super fine pens. This pen is the best "below 0.5" pen I've used. I heard a ton about these in my quest for smooth very fine pens. They did not disappoint! Pros: THIN LINES -- The ink flow is thin enough where my letters don't simply look like little blots of ink on the paper. NOT SCRATCHY -- Most pens 0.4 and below begin to get very "scratchy" while writing. The smoothness disappears and it does not feel nice to write with. Not these though, these are AMAZING. They are just as smooth as any other pen I write with SOLID LINES -- the ink flow does not skip like some competitors I've tried, just nice and smooth Cons: ERGONOMICS -- One thing I am not crazy about is the feel in your hand. They are super light and feel a bit cheap. While that's not really a big deal if they write the way I want, if your hands require a grip, these might be trouble for you. I was able to add a grip to the one I'm using now and that made a big difference but then you cannot put the cap back on... if these had a grip, they'd be near perfect. DESIGN/MATERIALS/LOOK -- Same as above, TOO light and plastic therefore feels cheap. I guess the look is a subjective thing, but I much prefer the look of other Pilot pens. FRAGILE TIP -- this one is to be expected given how thin the tip is... just be careful not to drop it. I dropped one and the tip bent. It was only a 6" drop from my hand onto my desk and just like that, the pen is useless. Just be careful handling them and you should be fine. Overall, while there are some cons to the design of this pen, the writing experience is still unbeatable if you like super fine pens. Grab a set, they are worth it if you can get over the poor aesthetics and ergonomics.

I use these in my Hobonichi planner. They are very fine but not scratchy. I will buy these again once I need to replace them.

These pilot pens, regardless of size, are all built the same. I've dropped these pens and had the tips bent, still worked most of the time, some I've had to trash, but only worked best on a specific angle. I've loaned this pen to someone more rough, and 'this person' ended up pushing the tip inside the pen, making it no longer work. I jammed mine on cardstock after that to see if that could happen but didn't work.?. Over all these are the best pens I've had, the ink lasts a long time, and sometimes if you stop writing for a day, you may need to scribble on some scrap paper to start again, but when you do, it's always dark, and keeps on going. I have one where I've left the cap off for months and wrote with no problem. I would recommend these pens, and I hope they keep making them, unlike other brands and models I've liked. I'll spend more money on a good pen when I can.

I purchased these solely because Pilot discontinued the 0.4 Hi-Tec-C Maica pens. I did some research online and discovered that these purportedly used the same ink/refill as Maica. While I can confirm that the refill in these does fit the barrel of the Maica, I am very sad to report that the quality is sub-par. I would not buy them again. My Maica pens always wrote perfectly with no pooling or skipping of ink. These 0.4 Hi-Tec-C, in contrast, regularly skip while writing, which is very frustrating. I don't know if it's because they were old (purchased from third-party seller on Amazon, so that's a possibility) or if the ink & nib are different. I also find the barrel size very uncomfortable, as it is much smaller in diameter than the Maica. If you are looking for a Maica replacement, this is not it. I haven't yet found a solution myself. I'm very disappointed that Pilot discontinued the Maica.

The line is indeed 0.4 mm. The ink flow is consistent and leads to consistent writing. These pens are now permanent choice for handwriting notes.

A nurse introduced me to these pens and I appreciate a good writing instrument. These pens write smoothly and being left handed are fast drying so there is no smudging. Overall very happy with this purchase.
