Peter Ustinov plays the Ghost of Blackbeard, a notorious pirate, who returns from the dead when gansters threaten to take over a boarding house run by his descendants. Suzanne Pleshette, Dean Jones and Elsa Lanchester co-star in this comedy-fantasy.

a treasure to keep
what can i say, years ago i saw this with my family in the 70s, and re watching this made all the memories come back, sentimental ? yes, but an honest review i shall give.they really do not make films like this anymore, like most films from disney of old, they put a lot of effort and atmosphere into their films, unlike later releases. dean jones and peter ustinov make a great pairing on screen, the story is fun and has many laughs and kids will love it, this film immerses you into a world of disney that has been lost for many years. if like me you like to secretly watch disney films then this is one to keep, with or without family, just a good feel good film. i hope you buy it because it is a classic.

Another attempt at reliving my youth
My little girl is of an age I can start trying to get her to watch the films I remember. Whilst this takes a little while to get going it is good fun. The athletics meet sequence and the "gunfight" had my daughter, my wife and I in stitches. Peter Ustinov hams it up like no ones business. It perhaps hasn't aged as well as some Disney classics but you won't be unhappy with your purchase.

Blackbeards Gold!
Disney really knew how to make 'em.Cracking yarn about a team coach who accidently invokes the ghost of Blackbeard (played brilliantly by the late great Peter Ustinov). Bound to the coach by an ancient curse he walks alongside him (Unseen by others) creating havoc aplenty until some good deed is done by him and he can pass over. A fun day on the track & field event competition will have you curled up with laughter as Cap'n Blackbeard takes charge and the fight scenes towards the end will have your ribs aching from laughing so hard. A real family treat. 5*****

Pretty good
This was always a favorite camp comedy from back in my childhood, as it would air on networks like The Disney Channel and others. The disc comes with closed captions, and is shown in a 4:3 aspect ratio. The film is a bit confused with the number of villains, unable to decide if the baddy is the football coach or the gambling kingpin Silky Seymour. The coach is dating Suzanne Pleshette's character of Jo Anne, who is the love interest for Dean Jones as Steve Walker.Pleshette and Jones were kind of the every couple for Disney in a few films, as I recall.Anyway, a point of confusion for some critics is why Seymour wants the island that the inn stands on if he already has gambling dens in town. My guess is that he keeps them underground and could be shut down, but since the island is in disputed property, it acts as a haven for building a casino. As it is, this film is a treasure trove for wonderful character actors, from Elsa Lanchester (The Bride of Frankenstein) and Richard Deacon, better known for roles on television.Old Lady #1 is played by former silent film star Betty Bronson, who passed not long after this film came out.A similar fate awaited Old Lady #2, played by Elsie Baker, who got her start in Vaudeville and worked later in silent films, radio, and TV.The film itself is full of family-friendly madcap antics with fun special effects that still hold up today as the ghost makes bottles of rum float off and seems to have motorcycles driving themselves. This is a great movie to pull out around Halloween or Talk Like A Pirate Day, as the chemistry between Ustinov & Jones is magnificent, and Jones does wonderful pantomime when he is supposed to play opposite the invisible ghost of Blackbeard. The film has a great resolution and fuels the imagination to want to find out more about the real life pirates of yore. So if you or your little scallywags like to watch comedies and pirate films, this remains a classic to get out whenever you like.

A cloying comedy with Ustinov, a fairly solid and lovable foil
Disney family entertainment hit is middling stride with a series of B-budgeted live-action releases starring Dean Jones. Today, they're best regarded for their quaint charm and use of a lot of one-time A-list talent, given to playing out simple, nimble-minded stories that don't strain the mind, and intermittently warm the heart. Disney Inc.'s executive decision to release its live action catalog via their own limited edition archive is a colossal mistake. Although the transfers are superb and solid, these discs come with NO extra features and cost a small fortune for anyone who does not belong to their Disney Club. Aside: you can only be a member if you reside in the U.S. So, Canucks like myself pay a premium to third-party vendors to get our 'family fix' which, I am fairly certain, would not be the case if Walt were alive today. It's rather disheartening, the trickle of memorable Disney live action catalog that is still MIA on Blu-ray, including 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea, That Darn Cat, The Happiest Millionaire, Song of the South, and, The North Avenue Irregulars - to name a handful. Blackbeard's Ghost may not be top-tier Disney, but the performances are good, the script serviceable and the quality of this 1080p hi-def transfer immaculate. So, if you do buy you are getting quality - minus any investment on Disney Inc.'s part to pad out your enjoyment with extra features. For shame! Badly done. And stingy to boot.

Still funny after all those years
I saw this Disney classic the first time when I was very young and till the time I grew up, "Blackbeard's Ghost" became one of the favourite and most watched video tapes in our family. It's always combined with a mixed feeling when you get the chance to relive moments of the past and to buy and watch older movies which you loved liked anything a long time ago. I always fear that "the magical touch", the special humour or the story's singularity, got somehow lost over all the years... but not with this movie!I watched this with my wife and daughter, both of them not closely acquainted with these Disney classics or with Peter Ustinov movies... and we all had a blast and lot of fun. The excellent acting - for me one of Ustinov's finest performances as badly behaving, undead pirate - and the funny and direct storytelling completely make up for the fact, that this movie is more than 40 years old... which makes it a comedy classic in the end.Highly recommened for the whole family (well, 6+ maybe -) and for everyone who likes strong humour - and who remembers Blackbeard's hilarious manipulations of the athletic competitition in his desperate conquest for redemption.
