I recommend reading it, but not buying it (if that makes sense)
Some good points, but seems to go all over the place. I thought it was going to focus on the art world and its relationship to late stage capitalism, but veers into algorithms, AI, and other contemporary topics. It doesn't go into anything deeply, and constantly makes academic-speak proclamations with little depth. Although I enjoyed reading it, I didn't come away from it having really learned anything new. It seems more of a piece meant to impress other academic arty types in her circle.

10/10
An amazing and though provoking book. Hito is an easy to understand writer who is beautifully poetic and pulls together both metaphor and fact in ways that have altered my thoughts on reality. She isn't too lofty or in the clouds.

Don’t listen to a 2002 financial analyst’s opinion
Hito Steyerl employs a narrative of non-fiction and fiction in her books- I’m not sure some people understand that. I recommend reading up on her process and her work before reviewing.

Broadens our thinking about art, politics and struggle
“Duty Free Art” by Hito Steyerl offers a highly original and useful philosophy of art in the age of inequality. Professor Steyerl is an acclaimed writer and video artist who lives in Berlin. This incredibly enlightening, entertaining and timely collection of essays willThe book consists of essays written by professor Steyerl from 2011 to 2016 on a range of topics. Professor Steyerl is most interested in digital technologies and its implications for the production, distribution and consumption of art. More than anything else, we learn how art has been corrupted by the wealthy few: in an increasingly precarious economy, art serves as a form of alternative currency for the One Percent. Throughout the discussion, the author suggests ways that artists might reassert their autonomy through greater solidarity with working people.I like that the artistry of Professor Steyerl, whose in-class lectures are considered to be artistic performances in themselves, are evident in her creative writing style. The author has a story teller’s flair for strategically revealing information only after we have thought through the issue. At other times, she masterfully weaves her disparate thoughts into a sort of free-associative rap that practically turns her text into poetry. It’s simply an intellectual tour-de-force that richly rewards readers who are keen to broaden their thinking about art, politics and struggle.I highly recommend this exceptional book to everyone.

The author, a film maker and artist, ponders the role of art in the modern age of digital technology. It's a difficult read, but very interesting.
