A very versatile product
The NAS runs like a charm with 2 VM's (Windows Server 2008 (AD) and a Sophos UTM) on top. After upgrading the RAM to 16GB Kingston KVR16LS11/8 RAM 8 GB 1600 MHz DDR3L Non-ECC CL11 SODIMM 1.35 V, 204-Pin 1.5 V Memory Module it has sufficient resources for all tasksThe only minus it takes more than 5 minutes to reboot and the VM's are not properly shutdown and restarted in the process.

One star because its the lowest I can give.
Great product, when it works. Unfortunately it kept disappearing off of my network for no reason. Then after just 2½ years it failed completely and will not boot back up. Customer service was not great. After my first message about it failing they went straight to repair or replace with an estimate of 540 US dollars. As far as I'm concerned this is not a device or company I could ever recommend to anyone.

Love this QNAP
Speed and easy of use is the best thing I can say... and what a thing to say!! I came from a synology nas and the swap between these nas has been so easy, don't be aware of changing the brand.. this is a high quality solution.

When it works, it works. When it doesn't, the support is non-existent.
The product itself is fairly quiet, performance (once tweaked a bit) ranges between good and very good for home use as a NAS. It struggles to keep up a bit if you're running anything i/o or CPU intensive on the device, and for that reason I'd avoid virtualization station or running plex media server on there - plex in particular struggled to keep up. For things that run in slow time it's fine. Firmware upgrades are a little dodgy, they can cause problems with software but there's a lot of moving parts. However, should you need to use QNAP's support you will be absolutely horrified. I'm now 7 days into an open ticket where my storage died on a reboot, and I'm not even getting responses. QNAP's Twitter account on friday told me someone would be in touch with me, my emails are basically being ignored. In order to get support for your QNAP they want you to open up the SSH port to the Internet, so they can log into your QNAP, make the changes on your home network and log out. An alternative is a helpdesk app where the terms and conditions say they can come back in at any time, access any data for any reason. I asked for clarification on that and was ignored. Your other alternative is to run a teamviewer session on your network that they can use to log in. This is bad for several reasons, but mostly it means that they lack solid processes to troubleshoot common errors and do it all on the fly.The QNAP community forums are no better, their advice is often to open a ticket the minute anything falls out of immediate fix territory. That is assuming they respond to your emails. I'm finding out 7 days in that they don't. I'm considering returning this once I've recovered my data, but don't know what I'll do next.I did actually end up setting up teamviewer for a time and date requested by them (8am), and they just didn't bother showing up. I don't know if I'll see my data again, 15tb of backups gone.

Very good until the Drive Ejection problem
I bought the TS-653A-4G a couple of years ago and have been very happy with it until recently.Last summer it had a problem where it ejected the drive from the third slot. I tested the drive and replaced it with another working drive, then reconfigured the system and it was okay until a few weeks ago.Again it ejected the drive from slot 3, and once or twice ejected drives from slots 4 and 5 too (I have 5 drives). All the drives have been tested and are working without problems.I looked online and found a massive thread on the Qnap site, where other people were having the exact same problem, often with the exact same drive slot. After reading through the thread, it seems this is a hardware fault with the backplane that the drives plug in to. The only way to fix the problem is to send the drive to the manufacturer and have the backplane replaced. Well, I hope that fixes it, but can't say definitively as people haven't had their replacements long enough to see if the problem arises again.Apart from the above showstopper problem, the unit is compact, solid and externally well made. The software is good and has regular updates.

Great until it fails
This NAS worked pretty well for 3 years but recently started exhibiting all kinds of failures including data corruption, memory usage issues, random reboots and failures to update the firmware (due to spurious checksum errors). Don't buy one of these if you want a long-term, reliable storage solution.
