Service Key is needed to reactivate your Quickbooks Payroll Subscription and you can get it through this software
So you have payroll and each year you must decide do I let them renew it or do I buy it on Amazon and save a couple hundred dollars. If you are a big company and money does not matter the choice is easy, just let them renew it and save time. However, if you are a small company and money matters here are the details. You will have to call 866-223-5562 to get your new payroll setup. I cannot figure a way around this step. This time I had to hold 24 minutes to get a rep. Not too bad and I actually made a sale while waiting. Yes, you will have to give them a card even though there is no charge and I only have 1 employee. You can argue as much as you want (I have done so past years when having a bad day) but they will not give in. This year, I just smiled and gave them a card. Next, you have to wait for them to generate the service key so you can reactivate your payroll. Not too bad this year, the entire call including hold time lasted 37 minutes which means only 13 minutes of speaking to the rep, verifying information and all that good stuff. Bottom line, we all know this is the only software that does what we need it to or obviously we would go somewhere else. I have been using this software for many years now and once you spend some time with it, it is quite easy to use.

Get your kid to call for activation, be a burden to your kids.... :)
Been on the phone for over an hour to simply generate a "payroll product key". This company should be broken up and have several class action suits brought against them. They create this issue on purpose, simply because you didn't buy it from them at 300% more cost. It is impossible to "activate" your payroll without calling. That is unless you purchase it from them directly. I was on hold for the first 5 minutes until I could speak to a rep. I told her to turn off the auto renew, then she had to deactivate the old payroll key in order to generate the new key. Looked pretty good at first. The when she said she was going to "generate" a new payroll key (which should just be located on the box) her system is running slow.... I have now been on the phone 90 minutes on hold while she "generate a key" I call BS. What are they running their system on a Timex Sinclair? Okay, well I finally got off the phone.... She can't generate a key for our payroll, I will have to call back tomorrow.... Sorry... Yea, so am I. You have no idea how sorry I am.. That I have to use this POS software....

Good deal if you use QB Payroll
It is a much better deal than purchasing these two separately. Intuit does not make it clear that you can use this even if you already have payroll installed, and you do not need to install the new payroll license at the time of installing the new QB. Installing the new QB will automatically use your existing payroll license, which has its own expiration date. You just wait till your current payroll license expires (note that QB will start giving you annoying notices when that is getting near), then to install the new payroll license for this package, you must first delete the old expired license, then when you go to "manage license" it will give you the option to "install from box". This new license will be good for 1 year from the date you install it.

I started using the payroll and it is definitely not ...
I started using the payroll and it is definitely not intuitive. then there was an additional charge on my credit card for 468.81 for some unknown reason. then had to wait on hold to talk to someone forever and try and get the charge reversed. easier to go to the accountant for sure.

Payroll option is misleading
The enhanced payroll is for one employee. Each additional employee costs $ 2.00 per month. Intuit has always nickel and dimed its customers and undercuts the professional accountants and CPA's.

It's painful to work with Intuit but the software works great once you jump through the hoops.
Yes, I had the same issue with Intuit Quickbooks that most everyone has, the payroll renewal is extremely expensive. I called Quickbooks and told them that I could buy not only the payroll renewal but an upgrade from desktop 2017 to desktop 2018 for half the price. They said, "Go for it!" I am not sure what the rationale is but they make it awkward, to say the least, to cancel your subscription then purchase the new software then get your new subscription registered. You must call them so they can make sure your company file is connected properly. It is painful but worth it when you consider you are saving over $200. I have done this 3 years in a row now and each time I spend about an hour getting it completed but the outcome is a new Quickbooks version running with a new payroll subscription. I would definitely recommend buying this to renew your payroll subscription.

Every year I waste 60-90 minutes activating one year payroll subscription that should take 5!
Every year I waste 60-90 minutes activating one year payroll subscription because the box disk does NOT activate payroll. Instead I have to call them and give my credit card in order for them to give me the payroll service key to enter in to my computer. It's extortion since they know there is really no other option for single person businesses. So they don't care if repeat customers are miserable. Although the instruction booklet states "From the Employees menu, choose Payroll > Install Payroll from Box..." the option is not there unless you delete the old subscription. Then you click on it BUT still have to provide credit card to get the new year.Update to original review; had to call and speak to someone is another country (speaks English semi-literately) and waste at 30 minutes activating with a credit card. Then in 364 days I will have to deactivate at year end (otherwise would charge about $440 which is almost double what this set with software costs). While the deactivation worked online last month - so thought this time I could finally sign up through the disk in box - that was after a 30 minute call and several tries :(

Good customer service
This is the 2nd year that I have purchased the newest desktop pro with enhanced payroll. In the long run, it is a saving rather than renewing an existing subscription and has the benefit of up-to-date program. Last year, I could relate to the reviewer that said the process to deactivate the old payroll (and get a refund for the auto subscription) and activate the new one was long, arduous (unskilled agent) and downright painful. This year I will say Quickbooks customer service was the exact opposite.
