Stargate: Continuum [DVD]

deja vu all over again
If you've not seen all ten seasons of the tv show Stargate SG1 or the tv film Stargate: the ark of truth, then stop right there. Because this is another tv movie that continues from where the show left off, and it doesn't make any concession for new viewers. If you have, then read on.Stargate continues here in another movie. The first one, the ark of truth, tied up some of the loose ends from the show. and this one deals with another. the fate of system lord ba'al. He's about to be executed, but he has one last trick up his sleeve. as a result the tineline is suddenly changed, and the surviving members of SG1 have to adapt to a somewhat different world. And deal with Ba'al when he launches the next stage of his plan.A competent and well made production, but it doesn't feel like anything we haven't seen before. and indeed we have, because the show did a changed timeline two part story at the end of it's eighth season.Initially impressive set pieces in the first half an hour - with some great location filming in the arctic - give way to a middle section which is all character drama as the characters have to cope with the strange new world. you will either like the moments in this or find it a bit slow, depending on what you want from this movie.action then kicks in come the final third of the movie, but despite some impressive cgi spaceships and a good use of jets the budget seems to have gone by this point. one big event happens offscreen and the final confrontation occues on a rather average set. There are delights for the fans in seeing richard dean anderson once again, and a final appearance in the show for don s. davis. but conversely the nature of the changed timeline means vala and teal'c don't figure very much, and their absences are rather noticeable.this is a competent and well made production but it's strictly for hardcore fans and yit's ultimately all a bit predictable. there is one dangling plot thread that is introduced as a way of setting up a future movie. hopefully that will be a bit more original.the dvd offers the following in addition to the movie:language tracks in english german and spanish.subtitles in english turkish spanish german and portugese.a commentary from the writer and the director.a twenty two minute long making of documentary. this has it's moments, not least an interesting look at the set built for the shipboard scenes and how the actors reacted to getting to fly in jets.a twenty minute long documentary about the filming in the arctic. this is a very interesting travelogue and has some great scenery on display so it's well worth a look.and a laymans guide to time travel, with a scientist explaining a few of the concepts. running just under twelve minutes you need to play close attention to all that he says, but it's really quite fascinating so it's worth a look. And that's this dvd. not the greastest thing ever, but it has it's good points.

Great Movie!
Great movie. Its a shame that this story arc wasn't done as part of the Stargate SG-1 TV series, as it would have been more detailed and thrilling. However, it did a job job in closing the Baal Story Arc and it great to see all of SG-1 including General Jack O'Neill and to the late Don S.Davies again.

Ba'al's swansong
`Continuum' is the second of the Stargate SG-1 TV movies and I feel it is far superior to `The Ark of Truth'. This movie sees the conclusion of the Ba'al clone storyline from the series with SG-1 overseeing the death of the last of the Ba'als. Ba'al has one last trick up his sleeve though and, through the use of time travel, sees to it that Earths gate is never found.`Continuum' is a great fun film that is very enjoyable and is a great ending to the Stargate series. The film could have probably used a bit more in the way of time in order to get the best out of the storyline but it nonetheless gives a good account of itself in the one and a half hours that it got. The acting and the script are on a par with the series proper but I must say that I did like Claudia Black's performances as her Goa'uld persona Quetesh and Cliff Simon as Ba'al is always enjoyable. There where a few small niggles with the special effects in places but otherwise they were on a par with those seen in the series.Overall, despite a couple of problems, `Continuum' proved to be a great film that is a must see for any Stargate fan.

Stargate in the Arctic!
After years of running round the same forest we actually get to see some of SG-1 in one of the least accessible places on Earth - the Arctic. Not only that but the US Navy actually lent one of their real submarines to the shoot, making the loan of two fighter jets by the US Air Force almost seem small in comparison. I could go on about the sheer number of guest appearances in this film, and the fact that it's got Ba'al in the lead villain role, and he's probably the most popular Stargate villain ever... But the most important thing is that it is a great SG-1 story, on a much larger scale than we've ever seen before. Well worth the money, even if you've seen it on TV (it has a very good set of extra features, including a long look at the Arctic shoot and the Navy sub).Oh, and if you're a parent worried about what the reviewer concerned about the "swearing" said, then I'd be more concerned with the couple of scenes involving a very sharp sword than a couple of uses of the "s-word". If you're that concerned, buy them Stargate Infinity - Vol 1 instead.

Not suitable for UK DVD players, A replay from the seller was a negative attitude, would not buy from this seller again also, my DVD player is a SONY and it plays all my collection of DVDs with no problems.

Like I said not a bad storyline but it appears ...
Interesting storyline, however having recently watched the full 10 series of Stargate I found this movie to be a little lacking in substance, it seemed to be more of an extended episode of the aforementioned TV series.Since there will probably now never be any further 'Stargate' TV series this movie although interesting seemed to be the last death throws of a now extinct SG1 saga.Like I said not a bad storyline but it appears to be the cast having one last fling as they dissapear into the sunset.Worth watching though if like me you enjoyed the 'Stargate' TV series.
