Do I need to use the foil with this?

No, You don't need to use the foil in this hookah! Just put the flavors inside the hookah bowl, then put the charcoal holder and put the charcoal inside.

Is this hookah supposed to be made of thick heavy glass as advertised or it supposed to be fragile thin glass, mine seems too fragile.

Mine is very thick. The downstem is extremely thick as well. I don't see it breaking unless you drop it on conrete
