Gavin Harrison Rhythmic Visions & Horizons DVD

Gavin Harrison's rhythmic visions and horizons combo is a great look into the mind of a very accomplished drummer and lucid musical thinker. Although somewhat on the dry side, the material is very well presented, and he flies through the demos of each concept with such ease it's astonishing. The material on the 'visions' disc is more/less in support of his book rhythmic illusions, and as such does not have any text support, which the 'horizons' disc does. His playing is incredibly precise and detailed...one could even make a study of the improvised pickups he plays on the snare drum to start each demo by themselves. The drums themselves are impeccably recorded, and sound fantastic. Not really recommended for beginners, as the content here has very little to do with the meat and potatoes of drumming skill-it's more like the icing on dessert, and neatly codifies ways of grasping metric modulation, beat displacement, and other arcane rhythmic concepts. That said, it's both great entertainment and deep study for serious musicians and it goes to show drummers how advanced you can get with rhythmic sophistication if you are already a very solid player. Highly recommended, and I thought the 2 disc combo was well priced at about $32.00

Gavin Harrison has got to be one of the best drummers of our time. He makes the incredibly complicated look amazingly simple. His style of teaching on this disc is excellent and very easy to understand. However, the lessons he teaches on this disc are definitely NOT for the beginner. The concepts and complex time signatures are WAY over my head, but I just enjoy watching the guy play. If you've never seen him play before PLEASE do yourself a favor and buy Porcupine Tree's 'Arriving Somewhere..." DVD. It is, quite simply put, sublime. PT are the best band that no one in America knows about. Gavin Harrison has surpassed Neil Peart as my favorite drummer, in no small part, due to this disc. BUY IT!

It's been a while since a study book proposed a drumming method which is entertaining, aesthetically pleasing, and technically provoking as this one.

I first heard Gavin Harrison back in the 80's and if anyone that's qualified to team up with "King Crimson" there's no one better thanGavin, he is indeed Unique and a Musician at Heart. Thank you Gavin.

If you like odd times and progressive music, this is a must have!! Gavin it's amazing!!

Gavin Harrison never ceased to amaze me. Despite his technical facility in rhythm and time, he's got great pocket and creativity. I love his take on polyrhythms and ideas for overriding. Amazing work!

Der hier wirkende Schlagzeuger ist für mich schon von Haus aus einer der innovativsten und vielseitigsten Drummer die ich überhaupt kenne. Darüber hinaus empfinde ich ihn aber auch noch als einen, der schwierige Inhalte klar verständlich auszudrücken vermag. Die Thematik ist zwar sehr komplex und einige Male während des Anschauens dachte ich mir auch schon "häääää?Wie war das noch mal???", aber insgesamt ist das eine DVD, von der jeder engangierte Drummer, der sich mit Odd Meters beschäftigen will, sehr viel lernen kann. Wer außerdem Lust empfindet, ein paar Tracks von Porcupine Tree nachzuspielen, kann die DVD auch dafür nutzen - die beste Investition seit langem für mich!

Harrison is currently one of my favourite drummers. The man is a giant in terms of his technique, his groove, his creativity, and his insane accuracy. I will never be able to do what he does, but it sure is wonderful watching him do it and explain it.
