Bought it as a gift for one of my siblings. They love it. Charming sound. Enchanting little instrument.

This Kalimba is very well done and the quality seems excellent. The high notes are surprisingly crisp & clear and I love the complete chromatic scale. I had a 17 note one but wanted these sharps & flats. I am impressed with the whole shebang, everything you need and then some! Still working on learning to play, but it’s fun & I enjoy the process. It is easy to use, so transportable, (Awesome sturdy case) feels wonderful to hold. I find the sounds soothing and ethereal even when I’m just tinkering around with it. It is a tremendous deal for the price and would recommend it to anyone. Love the booklet and thanks for the songs. Perfect!

The kalimba itself is beautiful and sounds wonderful. But I had to take a star away for 3 reasons. 1st - the layout is backwards/reversed from every other kalimba. The C scale is to the left instead of the right and this really throws off my playing. So I either have to get used to the new scale placement or go through the trouble of retuning the entire kalimba. 2nd - the textbook doesn't include anything about the 42 key kalimba and there was nothing provided that shows the unusual scale it is using. 3rd - I received duplicate stickers. I received 2 sets of the sharps. And since 42 key kalimba aren't mainstream it is hard the find correct stickers.

TLDR - I'm glad to have this in my collection. I see this kalimba fulfilling a niche for my lower-register-heavy songs or ones with lots of chromatics/accidentals. I rearranged my keys immediately and highly recommend doing so; I cannot see any advantage to the key layout LingTing ships this with. The pros: -Having the full range of sharps is very handy. My Hluru is my go-to besides for this, and I do feel the want on that one for the middle-range F# in particular. Yes, I can manually tune it when I need it for a song, but let's be honest, I'm lazy and that just makes me want to not play that song. I like having everything there on this one. - The extra bass notes are nice. I like it going all the way down to E. It makes it the *only* kalimba I can play for a song or two, short of totally reworking a harmony. -It has very close to/the same tonal quality as the Lingting 34. I would say the sound on this one is a little more sedate, a little darker; it's a touch less bell-like and a little more chime-y. - The keys, like the LingTing 34, are butter-smooth. I've found playing other kalimbas tends to tear up my thumbnails and leave little gouges over time; I don't have that problem with these LT models, and glissandos are easier on these models than others in my collection. - While the upper tines are weak, I like the lower tines more on this kalimba than other kalimbas with bass notes. I find they hold their pitch more; my other ones tend to become a little more wibbly-wobbly in lower notes and lose the actual note in just...bass. The cons: - The layout is...a bit bizarre. However, there's no reason it *has* to be that way. You can rearrange the tines, and I did so immediately. Upon unboxing I mirrored the tines so that the middle register keys are on the side that matches other 17/34 key kalimbas. It was a fair bit of work, but it's no trouble playing this now, and it doesn't mess up my muscle memory for other kalimbas too badly. - Other reviewers have commented about how 'unnecessarily' large it is; I don't know that I fully agree. It is very large and quite heavy, however, its keys are equitably far apart when compared to my other kalimbas. I've attached a photo next to my Hluru for comparison - if anything, I feel the lingting 42 has its keys a little *closer* together. I think there's a concern here, especially if you have grip/mobility issues, but I'm a woman with fairly small hands and have not felt tired or strained trying to play this - I'd approach the size of this one with caution but not fear, more or less. With that said, the fact you have your bass tines in the middle instead of tucked away on the upper register means that the kalimba is much wider, and thus there are some key combinations common in 17/34 key kalimbas that are going to be impossible on this one. Some songs may require adjusting to use different harmonies your fingers can actually reach in one spread. - I've had a persistent problem with this kalimba of....I'll say 'quality', for lack of a better term. I had a very early order of this, and it went out of stock for a long time afterward, so I'm not sure if things changed between that early release and now, but...my bottom tier is fine. My top tier has a *persistent* buzzing problem on some keys, like the whole bridge is rattling slightly. It may be that dust got in there during manufacturing; taking it apart again and cleaning it all thoroughly is on my to-do list. - The tuning on this style of kalimba remains a mixed blessing. Once you have everything tuned properly it's basically tuned until you have to clean it next, which is nice. But I've had a heck of a time getting this one properly in-tune, far more than my other kalimbas, even my 34-key with the same bridges. A lot of notes seem to permanently be just a little sour. Just be aware tuning it up could be an adventure, and get a good hex set. My kalimba did not arrive with any wrenches or keys for tuning. - While adding the lower E opens some doors to songs, losing the upper E costs me the ability to play some songs. But, the upper tines on the LingTing kalimbas are mid at best, so, imo I'm fine with this; I'll play the songs that lean high on my Hluru, which performs a lot better with high notes anyway.

Beautiful sounds comes

This particular Kalimba has 42 notes and is chromatic. It also has the enharmonic notes of E#/f and B#/C (which are on upper and lower courses of tines) so it is especially non-intuitive (and difficult) to play. It is also in reverse contrary motion to most diatonic kalimbas so it makes playing this Kalimba an intense feat of mental concentration, cause it will throw you if you don't give it all of your attention. It takes a lot of perseverance (and a modicum of music theory) to play it well. However due to its beautiful, warm intimate tone it is worth the considerable effort to master it. It will just take a heck of a lot longer than I anticipated to play it proficiently, and make it "sing". It's not a good instrument for the faint of heart ! Definitely worth the price it is a beautifully made and aesthetic Kalimba.
