Hugger MuggerNature Ultra Yoga Mat - Unique Variegated Design, Extra Cushion, Durable, Sticky and Grippy, Stable Non-Slip Surface, Lightweight

I have been using this mat for about 2 years, practicing yoga 2-4 times per week. It is a beautiful mat, and a "sticky"-type mat. It is lighweight and fits in a standard yoga mat bag.While I like the mat, it did take some getting used to.For one, it does have a bit of a smell when first removed from the plastic packaging. I can't really describe it, but it was not an unpleasant smell, just kind of...hmmm...not really rubbery smelling, not latex, but some type of synthetic smell. It does go away after a while.For another, it was extrememly slippery at first. I had to wash it well with water in the tub and dry it in the sun to remove the slippery coating that came on it. It is now not slippery as it was, but once the class heats up, if I am sweating a bit on hands and feet, I definitely slip on it, particularly my hands doing down dog. This slipperiness is pretty standard on these sticky-type mats, so this is not a particular defect of the mat itself, just the nature of this type of material.If you practice any kind of hot yoga, this would probably not be a good choice for you, unless you use one of those skidless blankets with it.If you do hatha yoga and don't sweat a whole lot, then I really recommend the mat for its wonderful softness and beautiful look.UPDATE 5/2009 - Since I have had it a while, and it was getting a bit dirty, I tried washing the mat in the tub with the tiniest amount of shampoo. BAD IDEA! Part of what makes this mat so spongy and comfy is all the little miniature air pockets inside the mat that are now trapped full of H20 and...soap bubbles! It has been drying for 2 days, and I am hopeful it will be OK. If you wash it after using it for a while, just hose it offf, per my yoga teacher. Don't submerge it, or you might be sorry like I am!UPDATE 6/2012 - About a year ago, I replaced this mat with another one because I loved it so much. This second mat lasted about a year - so disappointing. What started to happen is that the mat started to disintegrate toward the bottom where my toes are during plank, chaturanga, and the flip over the toes to downward dog. I do more yoga now than when I initially posted my review of this product, and I do more vinyasa type yoga (with sun salutations) which may be the cause of the earlier deterioration of the mat where my feet are in plank. But I was very disappointed it didn't last longer. I have since replaced the mat with a Jade Harmony mat which I love. It is not as cushy as this one, but better for me and my practice now.

I got my first Hugger Mugger Ultra mat over two years ago and decided it was time to replace it after lots of hours of practice which had reduced the cushion loft and even left deeply imprinted foot marks...I'm just as pleased with the replacement mat which is also a bit longer than my original mat (a nice bonus). I love the extra cushioning- it makes a huge positive difference for my comfort, and my joints are happy, too!I have tried several different mats as a spare through the years and have returned them all- Hugger Mugger can't be beat. Some were too heavy, got stinky, smelled like rubber, or were slippery. This one is just right! This mat is my safe haven for yoga practice and I rely on it.I practice Bikram Yoga about three times a week, so combining this mat with a Yogitoes skidless yoga towel is a win-win. I've washed the mat with mild dish soap to start the wearing-in process, and spray it down with a lavender oil/water mist after each class. This keeps the squeak and the stink down. If you have sweaty hands like I do- not a big problem in Bikram, since everything is sweaty- I would suggest adding a yoga towel to minimize slippage. A great value, with comfort and longevity- it's the perfect yoga mat!

I really love this yoga mat. It's a bit pricey but it turned out to be quite worth it. I use it primarily as just a generic workout mat, but I've done some yoga on it as well.Cushioning (4.5/5): This yoga mat provided a lot better cushioning than I expected it to, especially for my knees. However, when I'm pressing my whole body weight onto a particular joint, like the bones in my hips, I can still feel a bit of pain. That being said, it still provides great overall cushioning for its thickness.Nonslip (4/5): No yoga mat is perfectly nonslip, but I have to say this much exceeded my expectations. The first time I used the mat it was actually extremely slippery for me, but all I did was wipe it down with some water and the next time I used it, it was great. I sweat a lot and still feel very stable on this mat. The side that is touching the floor doesn't budge an inch, no matter what you are doing.Balance (5/5): I have no problems balancing on this mat.Aesthetic (5/5): looks exactly like the picture, the color is beautiful!

I wanted a yoga mat that was thick enough to protect my knees and non-slip for my sweaty hands. This mat fit the bill for those two criteria, but I discovered right away that it is a little bit too short for me.I am a pretty average height for a woman (5'4") and the mat is 5'8", so technically it should be long enough for me. I was a little surprised the first time I used it that either my head or my feet were extending off the mat all through my session. Maybe it's just because I'm new to yoga and my movement through the positions isn't very smooth yet. However, if you are taller than me, this mat may be difficult for you to use.Other than the length (which I'm hoping I will adapt to) I love the mat. It's very lightweight and pretty. It did have a strong smell when I first got it, but that went away after about a week.
