.co.uk Review In a nutshell: With the Six Nations more popular than ever there’s never been a greater demand for a decent rugby sim and this game is good enough to satisfy almost all comers. With a full range of both international and national teams this has everything a rugger fan could ask for. The lowdown: Rugby is not the easiest of sports to simulate for a video game but this is undoubtedly the best effort yet. It plays hard and fast with the rules sometimes (which is to say it ignores them if it will unduly affect the flow of play) but as an arcade style sports game it all works perfectly in context. Although occasionally unresponsive the controls cope well with the complexities of the game and the tutorials are great at helping you no matter whether you’re more unfamiliar with rugby or video games. There are also mountains of tournaments and cups, as well as some wholly original concepts like the Superstar mode - where only one player on each team can score points. Most exciting moment: Winning a virtual Grand Slam in the Six Nations cup with the country of your choice. Since you ask: Developers Swordfish Studios also produced the excellent World Championship Rugby for Acclaim, as well as the classic John Lomu Rugby for Codemasters. The bottom line: It’s not the Pro Evolution Soccer of rugby but it comes close. Good Try
I really enjoyed this game, it has an easy to learn, hard to master gameplay and has plenty of unlockable extras, challenges and classic matches which means you will be playing this game for some time. Including matches with the original scoring system, no points for try's only for goals. It has Licenced club competitions in the french top 14 and the Celtic league, the Guinness premiership teams are licensed, but not the competition. The game hasen't got the super 14 licence and its unlicensed equivanent still has 12 teams, you can chance the names of the clubs and cometitions but its time consuming to get it right. Also, when will game developers learn that rugby players are not as innocent as the RFU would like to think, and most players regard the rules as there to be broken (so long as the ref doesn't see) but this just dosen't happen in the game and penaltys are rare and almost always against you, yet as some features of the game are sketchy (they got scrums wrong, line-outs a bit wierd) some are non existant, the offside rule dosen't exist and it seems neither does the sin bin.Overall, this is a good game and good fun, but it's not quite real rugby.

Very frustrating - just poor, frankly
It could have been so good but I agree with many of the comments here. The overriding problem in terms of game play is that there is a lag before your commands are actioned in the game and that there is a moment after something happens in the game (eg tackles, side steps, etc etc) where your player under control pauses or at least does not take commands. This means that you can virtually forget kicks out of hand (especially grubbers and up-and-unders), side steps, hand offs as you don't have time to perform many of them usefully and so what reads like a reasonable attempt to turn this most complex of sports into a console game actually isn't because you cannot successfully use most of the features. So it reduces to a game where you just pass and run and go through many phases until ultimately you score or you lose the ball by turn over in the ruck or because it is picked up after you lose it in a heavy tackle (the last being one example of a situation where your ability to react to the ball on the floor is delayed slightly so you either run over it by sheer chance or watch helplessly as the opposition picks it up). There are also totally irrational aspects which I would describe as bugs, eg: you select to pass left and the passer executes a shoulder-dislocating pass which somehow goes behind him and right, totally taking you by surprise; passes skitter across the floor for no apparent reason; the scrum half randomly picks the ball out of a maul and boots it past the dead ball line, long passes (supposedly performed with a double tap) just fail to happen, players under contol of the computer run into the goal posts and fall over; during lineouts the throw of the ball ignores what you request and misses everyone before skittering across the floor etc. There are also a lot of rules of rugby that have been ignored, no offside, rarely is a penalty decided in any way other than a scrum, blatant forward passes are allowed sometimes but not others; any instance where the ball goes forward is called a knock-on even if the ball carrier catches it after fumbling it and so on.Overall, it sucks, it's frustrating and suitable for kids but only if they don't have a scooby about rugby and just need child-minding.The camera angles are appalling so you can't see what's coming much of the time, and finally: the tutorials are next to useless. The only ones that work well are the ones that help you grasp the most basic and easily performed tasks. The more advanced ones are poorly thought through, poorly executed and often hampered by the same lousy camera angles.Did I mention the commentary is totally repetitive?

Not as bad as the others make out
I have read the reviews below and I am not sure if we have been playing the same game! I am not a die hard rugby fan but I found this game easy to get into and pick up and play and had fun with it. Having said that I bought the game really cheap and this is reflected in my ratings.

Great game just doesn't work
This is a good game with a great career mode and gameplay but every few matches on the career mode when you have finished the match the game freezes on the loading page and you have to reset your PS2 and start from where you last saved it! This is not just my game which is faulty as everyone else i know with the game has the same problem. Also i must warn you this game does not have the correct player names for both club and country in the southern hemistphere.

Waste of money!!!
DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY ON THIS PIECE OF CR^&%P.1/ Graphics are cartoony.2/ Gameplay is to simplified.3/ Southern hemisphere licences are a joke.4/ Only international stadium.5/ On opposition penalty kick to touch the play just stops and the oppostition kicker just stands there with his ball in his hand and you have to quit the game. Can't belive i traded ea 2005 for this!!!!!Can't wait to trade it in for ea 2006!!!

Rugby Challenge - and what a challenege!
Having played rugby challenege for all of a half a day, I feel the trash can is where it will spend the rest of its days. It initially looks a promising game and the tutorials are a fun introduction. Playing the game though is just one disappointment after another. There appears to be very few rules and hand-offs can be likened to wielding an axe at the opposing players. Rucks are utter tripe with the stats of the team effectively determing them. Kicking is utterly ridiculous for example penalties can be landed from the ten metre line in your own half. For all the rugbonians out there this stinker is one to avoid, very dubious indeed.
