HYPERtheticals: 50 Questions for Insane Conversations

Great, imaginative mental exercise
I'm a big fan of Chuck Klosterman so I bought these on a whim. First thing I was surprised about was the size. I was imagining a simple deck of cards, but these are much larger. They're pretty high quality though, which is good because I can imagine these getting pulled out over and over again throughout time.As for the questions themselves? Awesome. Actually, I believe some of these are featured in his book "Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs", but it's nice to get a standalone collection of them. Also, if I remember correctly, the book only had 20-25 of these questions. Anyway, the cards are all ridiculous and surprisingly well thought out. The scenarios are detailed and provide just the right amount of information. Some of them are pretty basic ("Would you rather spend a year in Europe, or 10 minutes on the moon?"), some of them are more in-depth ("Would you let a gorilla play for the Oakland Raiders?"), but almost all of them can lead to some seriously heated debates. Also - I noticed a lot of reviewers pointing out you need to read this with relatively intelligent friends. Not true at all. The cards are very easy to read with simple concepts for anyone to grasp. True, some people will be a little boring and respond with a one word answer, but just push them to explain their choices and train of thought and it can turn into a very engaging conversation.

Great for meeting new people or getting to know them better
I bought these way back in early 2010, though I can't remember why I bought them, I'm glad I did. There's no right or wrong answers to these questions, and its not about what you're answer is, it's how you get to that answer. I've asked these questions to people I've known for years, and came to learn things about them I probably never would have otherwise. I keep these cards out where they're easy to be seen, and its started many conversation with people I sometimes hardly even know. The questions are different, and interesting.I would strongly recommend this to anyone who quickly tires of the surface-level stuff most people talk about, who likes thinking about things outside the box, or who just wants ways to get to know people better.

Chuck Klosterman must get lots of chicks.
This is a great game of open ended questions. There no score, just great conversations. Most of them are comical and interesting and have the power of creating great debates. A few feel like no brainers and possible filler.I've played this at parties and when guests come over and it has always been a big hit. Then I started memorizing the best questions and use them as ice breakers for conversion when I was in Germany. Now I ask my co-workers and random customers, when riding in elevators, waiting in line, etc. They are also a great way to meet women (or men if that's your thing) as they are essentially a great pick up line and a woman's willingness to answer is a great way to see if she is creative and/or has a good sense of humor. It's gotten to the point that my friends and I make up our own. Thanks Chuck Kolsterman for making me appear more interesting.

Absolutely nuts, freaking awesome!
These were recommended to me by a friend, as a fun, different party activity. I wasn't sure how these would go over with people I hardly knew, but they were an absolute hit. The great thing about these is that they are relatively free of vulgarity, while being so very funny and unique. Everyone at the party chimed in, even those who were shy and hadn't said much before. These cards are off the wall, absolutely nuts, and freaking awesome.

Nice balance of lightness and depth
Not as good as getting a "real" Klosterman release, but this what-if deck of cards is thought-provoking, most of them featuring Klosterman's off-the-wall wit.It has potential for party fun, assuming your crowd includes mostly pop-culture-obsessed, half-drunk philosophers. One downside: About half of the questions previously appeared in "Sex, Drugs and Cocoa Puffs." Readers of that book won't find as much new material. But if it has been a few years since you read SD&C, it's fun to revisit those ponderables again.A nice tide-over until Chuck gets us another book.

The ultimate icebreaker
Each one of the cards in this deck has a really interesting hypothetical to start a crazy conversation. As an example: What if you could watch a movie of your dreams, but you had to let your family and friends watch as well - would you do it?I've had a lot of fun posing some of these questions to people I know. This is a really fun deck and would be a really great gift for the conversationally challenged.

Klosterman Always Delivers Thought-provoking Stuff
I got into Klosterman's work late, started with Downtown Owl as an airport buy at a hub and went on to read Eating the Dinosaur and Sex, Drugs and Coco Puffs - then I saw this set and knew my friends and I could have a lot of fun with it. It was perfect because we would have a lot of similar "what if" conversations, and I'd mention they should read some of his work. With this set, they could sample it.While, it's true that some cards do double over his text's and essay's ideas; I still love the cards because every time we pull them out, we have completely different conversations with new people. If you really want to know what your friends are really like, don't go on a trip with them, buy this set!

Really insane questions
This is way out there. I had my smart friends over and we each drew a few cards, we laughed, we argued and we had divergent opinions on many situations. It opens our mind a lot. Like if you were challenged for a fight on the moon would you do it? And what would be your strategy? It was fun!
