For more than 800 years scholars have pointed to the dark augury having to do with "the last Pope." The prophecy, taken from St. Malachy's "Prophecy of the Popes," is among a list of verses predicting each of the Roman Catholic popes from Pope Celestine II to the final pope, "Peter the Roman," whose reign would end in the destruction of Rome. First published in 1595, the prophecies were attributed to St. Malachy by a Benedictine historian named Arnold de Wyon, who recorded them in his book, Lignum Vitæ. Tradition holds that Malachy had been called to Rome by Pope Innocent II, and while there, he experienced the vision of the future popes, including the last one, which he wrote down in a series of cryptic phrases. According to the prophecy, the next pope (following Benedict XVI) is to be the final pontiff, Petrus Romanus or Peter the Roman. The idea by some Catholics that the next pope on St. Malachy's list heralds the beginning of "great apostasy" followed by "great tribulation" sets the stage for the imminent unfolding of apocalyptic events, something many non-Catholics would agree with. This would give rise to a false prophet, who according to the book of Revelation leads the world's religious communities into embracing a political leader known as Antichrist. In recent history, several Catholic priests--some deceased now--have been surprisingly outspoken on what they have seen as this inevitable danger rising from within the ranks of Catholicism as a result of secret satanic "Illuminati-Masonic" influences. These priests claim secret knowledge of an multinational power elite and occult hierarchy operating behind supranatural and global political machinations. Excellent study and comprehensive assessment
I love these two guys (blessed memories). Absolutely fantastic read which was very hard to put down. I would highly recommend the book. One thing I really appreciated learning was that the demon Apollyon would possess the Antichrist, NOT Satan!

Petrus Romanus
I actually thought this book historically was very well researched and very well written. As a Roman Catholic who is non-practicing that has very many issues with this church I thought it gave a very balanced view from all sides. As to whether any of the prophecies turn out to be true we can only wait and see but it is still a very enjoyable read indeed. I had already read a great deal about the history of the Catholic church so it was nice to see that this book was very factual. Personally if you have an interest in this subject matter it is certainly one of the better books around to to buy.

Even-handed treatment, avoiding sensationalism
This is a well written, well documented book concerning prophecy and the Roman Catholic Church. The authors consider a remarkable convergence of prophecy - such as that of St. Malachy in the 12th Century and 'historicist' Christian writers of the 19th Century (not to mention Mayan prophecies of the end of the world!) - that point to 2012 as a potentially explosive year for the Papacy. If St. Malachy's prophecy proves correct, the next Pope after Benedict will be the last Pope.One thing for sure is that we're now fast approaching the end of 2012. Thankfully, the authors aren't in the sensationalist camp - and emphasize throughout the book that the prophecy may or may not prove true. What they seem more concerned to accomplish is a biblical analysis of Roman Catholicism. The chapter most instructive for me personally was titled, "Priestcraft, Sacraments, and Sorcery". After reading that, it was very hard *not* to see elements of both paganism and the occult in various practices of the R.C. Church.The authors also document extensively just how many Protestant-evangelical beliefs have been 'anathematized' by Rome. It has never been shy in pronouncing 'curses' on believers who have rejected certain dogmas - using them as a fear mechanism to exercise 'thought control' on ordinary Catholics, who are thereby prevented from thinking biblically for themselves.My one quibble is with elements of the authors' very own Protestant prejudice that creeps into the book. Two examples will suffice:1) Justification by faith alone. They emphasize Ephesians 2:8-9 as the "primary proof text for the famous reformation doctrine Sola Fide which is supported by a preponderance of the biblical data" (page 315). They then go on to list five verses from Romans and one from Titus; and assert (with R.C. Sproul) that sola fide is the "very essence of the gospel". There's only one problem here: the only time that "faith alone" (sola fide) is mentioned in Scripture is in James 2:24, which reads:"You see that a person is justified by works and not by faith alone."Oh boy. So who's being biblical here? And why don't the authors deal with this verse? (In my experience, James 2:24 either gets ignored or 'fudged' by Protestant evangelicals. At least one can say that Martin Luther was honest in realizing the import of James - and thereby pronouncing it an epistle of straw, even going so far as to question its canonicity!) It simply will not do to overlook James in a discussion of justification by faith alone.2) On page 317 the authors take issue with the Catechism of the Catholic Church, when it speaks of the Word becoming flesh to make us "partakers of the divine nature". They claim that this "echoes the serpent's lie in no uncertain terms", yet make no mention of the fact that the Cathechism is mere reflecting on 2 Peter 1:4, which reads:"...that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature."If you're going to have a pop at the Roman Catholic Church, be sure to first demonstrate a biblical basis for doing so - I say this as a fellow evangelical.As for St. Malachy's prophecy of "Petrus Romanus", time will (shortly) tell...

This the best book I have ever read on the influence of the RCurch on history!
I would recommend the book to everybody who wants to be informed about the influence the Catholic system had on human history and Christendom! This institution is guilty for the spiritual and physical death of millions of people, since Constantine defiled the pure Gospel as it was preached up to approximately 300 AD! This system is guilty of unbiblical, doctrinal, manipulation of precious masses of people, who follow them blindly, because the TRUTH of the Gospel is purposely withheld from them!THOSE who followed the truth of the Bible were massacred by them and they have NEVER repented about what they did!It is also informative for those who are interested in the END TIMES!

this book is worth a read. An interesting alternative overview if some aspects o f religious history. Unfortunately, it basically reads as a bigoted, fundamentalist protest against Catholicism, wildly misinterpreting meanings and using FACTS taken out of sensible context. I managed to see around the tiresome and relentless diatribe against Catholicism to appreciate the work and referencing that has gone into this. Read and enjoy with a pinch of salt between each finger.

Enlightening
Petrus Romanus is a densely worded, scholarly work which, for me, combines old and new information. The history of the Roman Catholic church, the Vatican and the basis on which their doctrine is built, needs to be more fully known - especially amongst Catholics - in order to fully appreciate the times in which we live and to be discerning about the future. An excellent book. I made the mistake of intially buying another book of the same title by another author which was a novel and and a waste of time.

Overall good research, but we need to be careful with dates, as most preachers and writers have gotten 2012 very wrong as nothing has happened.Petrus Romanus may have appeared in 2012, but we do not know the precise date he will show his face.

The Prophecy of the last pope is very grim and disturbing. Peter the Roman the last pope, it is said, will be the false prophet of the Bible, and he will lead the Roman Catholic Church and the worlds religions into accepting the antichrist as the messiah (Christ) and the church will be destroyed.I just told you the ending should you read this Book.YES!!!
