Not Usual Smiths Quality
If you think that you are buying a Smiths product made in the good old US of A - forget it, this is made in the World's Factory China and it shows. The diamond "steel" with it's perforated surface is somebody's good idea to make a visual impact as it makes no positive difference to the sharpening effectiveness at all. I have used an elliptical diamond steel for over 2 years and so have got used to the oval shape and this steel makes very hard work of a large Japanese knife. If you are looking to put an edge back onto the blunted knife then this is not tool for you and if you are looking to hone a blade then this is not an effective tool. My conclusion is that the perforated surface has 2 functions 1. Visual Impact and "uniqueness" 2. Small diamond surface area makes for reduced manufacturing cost. In summary, a very expensive Smith branded item that falls far short of the quality that this Company used to trade on - typically poor quality PRC product which is vastly overpriced.
