BEWARE! Tag difficult to remove.
I purchased this to use the RFID tag. I gave it 3 stars because the bypass plug itself on the two that I received had the little end nubs broken off. Whether this was damaged in shipping or careless quality control and storage, I don't know. If you're going to use it specifically as a bypass plug be aware some of them are damaged.Despite previous reviews and videos online saying the chip is simple to remove, it is not. Some reviews had indicated that simply inserting a Flathead screwdriver under it would pop it right out. I was very careful and delicate but the end result was the tag being destroyed trying to remove it on the 1st bypass plug I got. It may be that GE has caught on and is using a stronger adhesive which would make sense.SOLUTION:On the 2nd bypass plug I got I was able to remove the tag from the plug still attached to a piece of the plastic housing (see picture). This was by skillful use of my trusty dremmel tool's cutting blade. It fits snug and still has enough room to fit a filter in once it is taped in.

Easy to Remove RFID chip
Bought it just for the RFID chip. It was easy to remove and tape to the fridge. No more being forced to buy GE filters!Edit: at the time I posted this review the RFID tag popped right off with no difficulty. It appears that GE modified it to no longer be so simple.

I joined the "Not filtering" club!
I bought this with the sole intent of cutting out the RFID chip and taping it in my GE fridge.TIP: Use a hacksaw to gently cut the RFID chip out. Don't use pliers or a screwdriver to pry the chip off - you'll probably break it. Use duct tape to tape the chip to the spot where the chip normally presses against the fridge. To find this spot, remove your $50 overpriced filter from the fridge, put a dab of paint or ink over where its chip is and put it back in the fridge pressing it against the wall to mark the spot. The remove it and tape in your cut out chip! Insert the reasonably priced filter and boom - you're in the club.

Amazing- Fixes GE’s Corrupt Practices
This plug is EXACTLY what you want. Like EVERYONE who buys this the whole plastic plug part gets thrown in the garbage and the tiny microchip is what you want. It works perfect. Very simple and best of all its a incredibly awesome (insert your choice of swear word here) to GE and their corrupt water filter BS. You lost a customer forever GE with your petty practices.

Works well in my GFE28G
Based on hope and absolutely nothing else, I was running out of ideas for bypassing on a GFE28G. Didn't look like they had a bypass, and I'm not about to let GE hold my water hostage!Well, I found this guy, it has an RFID chip in it, and it works perfectly in my fridge. Surprisingly, those darn salesmen don't tell you about the need for water filters every 6 months (or maybe even sooner than that), especially for 50 bucks.Nah. None of that with this bypass. Can confirm it is for the GE GFE28G.

Perfect for our fridge . . .
Since our water is filtered under the house, and I wasn't particularly interested in spending $100+ a year for replacement filters, this works great. We have a whole house water filter and didn't need this; in fact, one of the reasons that tipped the refrigerator we purchased in favor was the bypass plug that allows you to avoid that extra expense. $55 for a water filter? Fogetaboutit! In fact, we were supposed to receive the bypass with the refrigerator, but didn't. This was cheap enough that we just ended up ordering one without going through the hassle of arguing with the manufacturer.

The RFID chip is epoxied down. Tricky to remove for the GE fridge hack to use cheaper filters.
If you really want to avoid using filters, this will work fine. If you want to use it for the "GE fridge filter hack" you have to be extremely careful removing the RFID chip by using a hack saw to cut the plastic around the chip. DO NOT try to pull the RFID chip away from the plastic or it will tear apart. Once you cut the plastic around the chip you can use coarse sandpaper to grind away the ragged/excess plastic. Grind too much and the chip is useless. Also be careful because Amazon will recommend the wrong water filters to go with this bypass filter. I spent way too much money trying to work around GE's unethical water filter implementation. A year ago, I bought the bypass filter and accidentally destroyed the RFID chip. A year later I bought another bypass and was able to remove the RFID chip successfully, but I followed Amazon's recommendations and bought the wrong aftermarket water filter. I didn't notice until I opened the packaging voiding the return.Basically, I burned $70 before a got a valid workaround to GE's water hijack scheme. Be careful and you can work around it for much less.

Don't buy expensive filters with the 6 month nag reminder.
I cut this open and took out the tiny RFID tag, then I taped it into my refrigerator. Now I can use regular $12 filters instead of $65 filters that nag me every 6 months to change the filter. I'm pretty sure I can remember to do that every June and December.
