Q: Would this item work if slipped inside of a more industrial sized roll of tp? like the kind you would find in say a convenience store bathroom?

The best is a regular roll if the industrial roll is close to the same size as the cardboard part of a reg roll it will be perfect. It has to squeeze two metal pieces sticking out for it to work. I know some industrial rolls are the same size in the middle and some are not.
