The Real Easy Ear Training Book (The Real Easy Series)

Provides an excellent step-by-step path for ear training
First, don't search for the CDs. On the cover of the book, it indicates where you can download the exercises. The "Real Easy" aspect of this book is that it provides an incremental method for accomplishing ear training. The reader needs to provide the not-so-easy effort to practice and acquire these skills. What you don't know, you need to learn! For example, if you're not familiar with the bass clef, learn the names of the lines and spaces as a child first learning music would. There's no magic in this book. You just need to follow the path provided: learn and practice!

Know your music basics before purchasing
Not a book for beginners. A reader needs to be able to read music notation and have access to an App or instrument that can play the bass clef notes as this is where the third activity in Chp 1 "Hearing the Base Line" begins. Activity #4 on page 4 a reader is asked to sing the root motion of the chord progression from the lead sheet. By Activity #6, Chp 1. the exercise is to write, play and sing through 6 of the major scales in the bass clef which the author acknowledges will be a review i.e from one's previous music experience, not included in this book. So yes, it may be "real easy" after a couple of years of playing/studying a musical instrument. However, if you plan to study this book by yourself, my advice is to make sure you know your music basics before purchasing it.

Next best thing to taking college ear training course
I've been playing guitar off and on for over 15 years and i purchased this to enhance my playing. I purchased this book overa year ago and i have definitely noticed that i hear nuances in chords and progressions in a way that i've overlooked in the past.I believe this book would definitely aide beginner musicians learning the diatonic scale and music theory. It really didhelp me internalize the sound of intervals, triads and root motion in a new way. Radley uses examples from a wide range of music genres as well as artists (e.g. Hendirx, Hootie & the Blowfish, Al Jarreau, etc.) so it's not a stuffy boring book. I found some of the initial examples require an instrument that can hit some low bass notes; I used guitar, bass and an Ipad piano app to work through the book. My Ipad app instrument was my favorite to work with since i could use headphones and voice the notes much clearer while practicing.I think it's a well written book and methodology written by a well known professor at Berklee College of Music, and a greatvalue considering what you would have to pay in tuition costs to take this course at Berklee. It might be a little challenging for beginning musicians, but definitely worth the effort. This book won't magically makeyou ear trained once you completed it, but you will have improved in some way. And I agree with one of the other reviewers that stated, "you'll get out of it what you put in."

fun and educational!
This book focuses on learning to hear harmonic progressions. You should first know how to read music and probably already have some basic ear training--enough to transcribe a simple melody. A semester of music theory, for example, should be plenty. There's no magic bullet here; this is just a guide to the necessary hours of practice. But the framework she provides is clear and sensible. The text is well-written, and the book's well laid out and easy to use. The accompanying audio examples are also high quality. Also, she suggests recordings to use as practice material, and gathers the suggestions into a discography at the end. The choices are well thought-out: they stand up to repeated listening; they're at appropriate levels of difficulty; they're mostly easy to find, and many will be familiar (which helps give the feeling of learning names for things you've heard before).I've made it about halfway through, and I'm having fun and learning a lot. Highly recommended. You'll also want a notebook with some manuscript paper, some comfortable headphones, an instrument to try stuff on, and access to a good music library (I've been using Google's subscription service plus CD's for occasional exceptions (mainly Beatles songs)). This isn't something to read passively. It would also be better with a teacher or at least some fellow students to work with, but I'm finding it useful enough on my own.

First impressions - good
Postage from the US to Australia is incredibly slow, so the book has not long arrived, giving little opportunity to progress far into it. First impressions though are good. It is well laid out, clearly based on long years of valuable experience and contains plenty of practical, worked examples with lots of recorded material. I am particularly impressed by the discology. Most important, it provides an approach that someone whose musical experience is strong but ill-disciplined can build on.

Not easy...
Should be called the "Really hard, but easy to understand, Ear Training". Quite honestly I needed far more hand-holding and examples at the very beginning stage of simply hearing melodies. She takes us into chords and harmonic movement just 10 or so pages in. Still, it's the best method I've come across.

Excellent
This is a very practical book, both clear and detailed. It starts simply, but then covers a lot of ground. There are always plenty of examples of the points taught with a list of tracks to listen to, so that everything feels relevant and never simply academic. As another reviewer said, you'll get as much out of this book as you are prepared to put in. You could spend a lot of time on each lesson and continue to improve. If you take it seriously, your aural abilities will definitely improve in some way.I like this book so much, my only regret is that I bought the kindle version, downloading the music free from the publishers. While I can enlarge the print, musical notation remains small and faint, quite difficult to read. I'd recommend getting a hard copy.

Real Easy Ear Training book
Sher Music Co. books are are good. This one jumps in to sol fa singing almost immediately and listening to bass lines. As such I think it is more aimed at the intermediate end of the spectrum but would be useful for anyone that is interested in ear training and hearing changes. For what it is worth it is my view that the ability to hear and then play what you hear is a holy grail. This book is a step toward that goal.

This book will help develop better ear.
It's a top goal for every musician to have a good ear for music. Fantastic book full of great ideas for developing a better ear. If you discipline yourself to work through this material your ear will improve but there is a lot of work to be done. Best to set aside a short time each day so you don't discourage yourself. If you stick with it you will hear the difference.

Must have for all serious musicians!
Ear training is a severely neglected skill among musicians. This book covers all the essentials in a very thorough way. Awesome. It is the best book I've found on the topic.
