WORKPRO 3-Piece Locking Pliers Set

Bought these for a few odd jobs I had in the queue. B&Q were asking for £10 per vice grip and these were bare metal. To get all 3 for £20 with rubber grips is great - and they have a reliable, sturdy feel to them, too. Impressed with the grip. Used them to remove a really rusted on oil pressure switch on the car, to remove a couple threaded screws in an old cabinet, and to pull out a few wood staples on the bottom of the couch that were really stubborn. Made easy work, so can’t complain for the price.

When comparing to my old unbranded worn out pliers, the new ones are OK, just the small one is wobbly and less precise, a bit of irritating misalignment everywhere, but the jaws close straight. The material of the jaws became harder (compared by marking it with a centre punch and hammer) compared to the old forged steel jaws. The jaws, sheet material of the arms and the pivot are thicker, the feeling on the arms is about the same except that the new pliers are more difficult to unlock. The plastic handles are a nice addition, although upon comparing not sure if they are essential. The jaws open wider than in the old ones. Three months of very light use - the rubber handles came off, see the included photo. It is a manufacturing defect, yet another one in addition to wobbliness, misalignment of the small pliers, and excessive force required to unlock these pliers. I glued the rubber handles back with epoxy resin – take a note of it, you might need it too. They are still usable tools, and there are worse out there. To those interested the jaw hardness in this pliers is about 45-50 HRC, which is not a lot, but OK for up to grade 10.9 bolts (32-39 HRC). For comparison, Irwin pliers when they were made in the US were HRC 54–58. It seems that all modern designs of locking pliers (e.g. these, Milwaukee, Stanley, etc.) have switched to attaching the upper jaw to the arms by using brazing with brass alloy instead of riveting - so you can see fewer rivets now. It is probably due to avoiding hard impacts on the new hardened CrV parts during riveting. A downside is the gap needed for brazing, which leads to more wobbling. A minor annoyance is the limiter on the "over-centre" type of locking mechanism being a bit too far over the centre, which requires quite a pull to unlock the pliers. This also reduces the clumping force, because the jaws are moving slightly apart when the lock goes far over the centre. Good for occasional use.
