Review: Not only for Young Athletes.. a Guide to Mental Toughness, period! - I found Chad Metcalf, (the author) on YouTube. His videos are super engaging, funny, concise and educational. I don't have kids and am not an athlete, but was curious about Mental Toughness in general. So, as a fan of Chads' I picked up the book , "Young Athletes' Ultimate Guide to Mental Toughness " As expected, the book is full of gems. He offers guidance, actionable steps, principles, examples, relatable stories and a can do attitude for anyone wanting to learn about Mental toughness. In Chapter 8, "Mental Toughness in the Real World," he's speaking to me... applying the principles beyond sports. Sorry folks, I'm not gonna list the teachings here, you've got to read the book ;-) For parents, kids, coaches, anyone who wants to become a person who can aspire, achieve and be unstoppable this little book gives generously. Review: Practical Advice from a Former SEAL -- not just motivational tough-guy fluff! - Let's face it: "mental toughness" is a million dollar buzzword in the billion dollar coaching, self-help and personal development space these days. Almost everytime someone comes out saying they understand the "key" to this overused and misunderstood concept, however, it's really difficult for the perceptive person not to roll their eyes. That's what I like so much about Chad's approach. Unlike other former SEALs (think Jocko and Goggins for instance), Chad's shtick isn't to tell you that every single traumatizing hardship you might face in life is "good" or useful to make you stronger. He's not here to tell you to run an ultramarathon on a stress fractured leg and ruin training for the next 3 months for yourself -- nor would he do that himself just to set a high example, while telling you to do as he says, but not as he does. What he does explain, however, is how to go about taking an "L" and moving forward with grace and dignity -- where most people would otherwise get discouraged, fall off, and fall short of their potential. I think this is especially useful in terms of what sort of expectations we put on our young athletes. Anyways, if you're a coach of young athletes, a parent, or a young athlete yourself, give this book a read! I'm 100% sure you'll take something useful away.

A Book for EVERYONE!!!
This book applies to everyone no matter what goal you are striving to get to. It does not have to be athleticism alone. He teaches you practical ways to implement tools to help you succeed. One of the most profound thoughts he touched on for me that struck a chord was โdonโt let praise or negativity be the driving force either way.โ I think too many times we focus on the praise and positivity because we believe that will drive us to win or cross that finish line. Honesty, this book needs to be read by all. Whether you are winning a game or in life or at your job, the wisdom in this book can be applied to it all. Highly recommend!!!!!

Strategies
Mental toughness is a phrase you will see again and again and is usually developed through hours and hours of rigorous training. For some, this is a natural process. For others, this is a struggle. An essential ingredient is self confidence and many teenagers struggle with this. Metcalfโs book gives sportspersons a structure where they can analyse their own knowledge and performance towards self improvement. Tools for developing self confidence and mental toughness. Recommended reading.

This isn't just another book about sports.
I love that the author doesn't make it just about sports but about qualities needed in everyday life. It is about strength and grit and that losses add knowledge to your life. Our children need to know that they may not always win but we learn from every experience and we grow and get better and keep trying. They shouldn't give up after a loss. Success comes by staying motivated, working hard and pushing forward. I enjoyed reading this book with my son and recommend it.
