Wow, just wow!
Absolutely incredible. Imagine if a dead fish was left in a hot dumpster behind a seafood restaurant for six weeks, then canned in its own juices and opened inside your kitchen. The aroma hits first — a delicate blend of rotting fish, sewage, and divorce proceedings. The flavor somehow manages to be even worse. I took one bite and immediately understood why the Vikings spent so much time leaving Scandinavia.

There was barely any fish at all — it was mostly just bones.
Very disappointed. There was barely any fish at all — it was mostly just bones. I expected actual pieces of fish, but unfortunately, there was almost nothing to eat. I would not buy this product again.

My experience with this fish
The can came intact and a bit puffy. Normal for this stuff. I’d recommend opening outdoors. Pop the can while it’s submerged in large pot or bucket of cold water. It does smell bad at first. Let it burp off all the air while it’s submerged. Then you can drain it and open the can the rest of the way. The fillets will be tattered and sometimes a bit gooey and yes there are bones. I put the fish on flat bread with plain boiled potato, sliced onion and sour cream. It’s salty, strong but good funky smelling fish. Not everyone will like it. My can had about six fillets or chunks . They aren’t packed in there like a sardine. It’s more liquid than fish because they’re fermented and broken down. My grandmother served this during special occasions. This brought back fond memories.

Opened a decayed glob of paste
Opened it in water, but no filets. Just a gnarly glob of paste and bones. I was going to put it on a flatbread with potatoes, red onions, cheese, cilantro and sour cream. What a disappointment.

Clearly shipped an inedible item
I opened this product shortly after receiving. The condition of the fish was inedible. There was only bones and frothy juice. Even the label instructions state to drain the juice and rinse the fish but there was nothing to eat, just bones. I expected what I had seen in videos. Small pieces of fish in juice. I also understand it is fermented but this had clearly went bad. After I researched, I learned that the surströmming should not be eaten in that condition and had went "bad". Im disappointed that it was inedible and I am unable for return because its a food item. I should get a refund. The product was inedible.

Be careful with order timing
While my can was unfortunately very over fermented and I did not get to enjoy the product, the seller was sincere and apologized for the inconvenience. I will likely be trying this again in the future. PS- the smell really isn't that bad. Make sure to open it underwater or you'll have a bad time

Just a pile of bones. Complete scam
I spent $63 on groceries for a Surströmmingspremiären (Sour herring premiere) party. Had a group of friends over and prepped all the fixings only to find out this $50 canned fish was literally just a pile of bones. No meat whatsoever. Completely rediculous. Night ruined. Absolute scam. Do not buy
