but where it seemed like it had been opened before (smudge on the case ...
Okay, early days yet - the first one didn't arrive, but it had no covering packaging - maybe someone else needed a grill. Amazon sorted this almost immediately. When arrived, slight damage to box, but where it seemed like it had been opened before (smudge on the case and a second "closing" sticker, with interior bags moved) it was in excellent condition, new in every other way, it had not been used. Followed the instructions to heat up, excellent toasties, and burgers today - quickly. It does collect fat, but that part is a tiny pfaff compared to the good results. The heating plate goes towards the middle, so for some thing you may need to move them for perfect even-ness, Got it for Cuban sandwiches. The lever is solid, the whole thing seems well made, many settings for height, it does open out completely, but I haven't really used it this way. If the situation changes, will advise, but otherwise a solid piece of kit that cooks really well, and quickly, including good caramelisation. Worth it so far.

It could be the best grill we ever had but...
This is an amazing grill, great size, versatile, we love the bbq option, easy to detach and re-attach the plates and this could easily be a 5* review but cleaning this grill is close to impossible. The grease gets everywhere, all the time, impossible to keep it clean. Whats even worse is that there is a rod running at the back of the grill which basically gets in the way of the grease flow so it gets dirty all the time and very difficult to clean it. Quite often the grease gets under the grill making a complete mess out of your kitchen. I wish they would paid attention to this. If you are precious about keeping your grill clean like I am, you'll hate this grill.

Not Perfect, But Best Contact Grill I've Ever Owned
So, firstly this feels well built and sturdy. It comes with flat plates as well as ridged griddle plates and a very easy system for removing them for cleaning which was key for me as griddle plates while they give you the nice lines on the food aren't nearly so easy to wipe down after using. It looks good too. As I say - for me this is all about being easy to clean and this one ticks that box as well as having other nice features such as the lock and height adjustabilityAs others have pointed out the fat drainage system is the only thing that isn't quite perfect, as the grill doesn't have a slope on it, nor a "guide" for the fat to run down to. You can just sit it on a chopping board or something to get the slope, or if you're anal like me and you want it done properly you can buy some 6 mm dowel pins and rubber covers (linked below). Put one rubber cover over each end and gently tap the dowels into the recess for the rubber feet at the front with a hammer (obviously having remove the rubber feet). No screws or any other tools required. See pictures. There's also a hinge bar that sits a few mm from the drain exit at the back of the plate. I am not sure if this is delibrate so you don't end up with anything other than liquid in the drainage trough that runs underneath. Either way - I don't see this as an issue as I think if you end up with big chunks of debris dropping into the trough and then try to draw it out, you'll make a mess. See pictures to see what I mean.I'd also recommend a flat set of kitchen tongs so you can both move stuff around etc, but also push the fat as it builds up toward the drain at the back. If you do these things then you have a really nice looking, sturdy bit of kit that is as I say most critically really easy to clean and really easy to remove the plates from. The quality of the coating on the plates seems excellent as well in terms of how non-stick it is. You can just wipe over with a damp cloth or some kitchen towel when you're done and it's clean - and as I say particularly easy if you use the flat plates.Dowel pins - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07MW8WR98/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o04_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Rubber end caps - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07TZPK7NG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o00_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Flat tongs - https://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B07P8XGQHG/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1Good product - designers should just review fat drainage system - then it would be an easy 5 stars.

German Made, and it shows!
An excellent grill. Far heftier than the more popular brands, and better thought out too. It opens flat doubling the cooking space. The lid is adjustable, and level, so it cooks whatever is on it evenly. To adjust the heat, simply slide the knob up or down.... you don't have to enter every last detail about the food so the machine can 'think' for you, you use the knowledge you've already got about food to cook it! Easy to use and should last for years. German made, see :)

Best we've had!
Had this for awhile now and use it frequently for toasties, sausages, pork chops/steaks etc... and are very happy with it. It's larger than our previous Tefal and great that you can use it open. The plates are removable and clean up easily, always a big plus. Simple to use, cooks well and easy clean up!

Beautiful but not enough power
Works really well and easy to clean. Very well made and nice looking. However, it’s not powerful enough for grilling meat or chicken. Stakes are compete no go unless you like them well-boiled. Chicken is okish, but takes a while and doesn’t have much crust. Works well for sandwiches and mushrooms though.

Not sure if I have a dud?
I loved the idea of this and couldn’t wait to get it, but mine is almost smooth, I thought it would feel rough to be able to grate sufficiently, I’ve tried garlic and ginger and even when pressing really hard it just doesn’t grate, it is almost like I’m just squashing it, I’m not sure if mine is a dud plate, surely it should be fought or even sharpish? Anyway I wouldn’t recommend on my experience,

Versatile and easy to clean
This is the best panini press I have ever used, it is also great for chicken and steak, so versatile and easy to clean, just pop the plates and drip tray in the dishwasher.
