the bottom to the zipper area is nearly 7.5inches, total height is 9.5inches

This is a soft side bag, but it stays firm like the photograph in the ad when opened. The photographs of the bag both open and zipped closed are accurate depictions of the bag. The most important thing is that when the bag is filled with the usual sort of items one would put in a make-up bag, the bottom of the bag is firm and doesn't sag. There is a hard insert on the bottom of the bag that keeps the bottom of the bag from sagging when filled.
