Honeywell 5816OD Outdoor Wireless Magnetic Contact

A great product - if you're careful about where you place them.
I've owned six of these security transmitters for about a month now, and am generally pleased with their operation. I own a small 5 acre farm and have them installed all over the property on wooden gates, in a barn, on tractors & equipment, and in a small metal shed. Most of the transmitters cover two separate zones by utilizing both the on-board magnetic reed switch as well as an externally wired reed switch/magnet combination which is connected back to the transmitter via a 3-conductor 18 gauge underground irrigation cable. In this way one transmitter can cover two separate gates and I get twice the coverage for a single transmitter. When I first purchased the units I was worried that range would be a problem as I faced two separate issues: (1) The range from my house to the barn is just over 300 feet which is greater than the (typical) 200 foot range listed in the specifications and (2) the security system receiver is mounted inside a steel frame dwelling which is extensively covered top to bottom in a double layer of 6" thick aluminum-clad foam insulation and all of the windows use aluminum mesh window screens. I was afraid that all that metal would prevent the signal from getting through (I generally have lousy FM and AM radio reception inside and need to use external radio antennas) but it turns out that the receiver has caught each and every signal that the transmitters have made - with just one notable exception. The transmitters DON'T like to be mounted inside metal outbuildings, such as an aluminum or steel shed. Enough RF cannot get out of the shed to make it to the receiver 200 feet away in the metal house. In fairness to Honeywell, however, this issue is mentioned in their brochures, and I solved the problem by simply re-mounting the transmitter outside (guarding a gate next to the metal shed) while I ran underground irrigation wiring into the shed to catch a sensor inside. Works great this way. Thus far, the sensors have shown great reliability and better than advertised range, assuming that you keep in mind some simple common-sense rules with respect to mounting (don't bury them, encase them in metal or metallized paint, look for line-of-sight propagation paths, and keep them as high as reasonably possible above ground). Programming went without a hitch and they interfaced perfectly to a Honeywell Vista-50P security system. The only down-side to the product is that they are much larger and bulkier than the usual Honeywell RF sensor (making them more difficult to hide - but they are designed to be painted in order to help camoflauge them) and they are pricey, which I guess is what you pay for Mil-Spec performance. Overall, I'd recommend this product if you are looking for all-weather performance, good range, long life, and high reliability. Be prepared, however, to lighten your wallet a bit in order to gain these advantages.

**Changed Review, Doesn't hold up outdoors
New part, not even 4 months later the plastic is falling part from being outdoors in the sun. See photo, I'm really disappointed in the product since it's almost $70 and they appear to be using cheap plastic. I went to Honeywells website to look up the warranty and you need to essentially mail the old product, or call an 800 number or fax. No email or online submission of a photo to show the problem. I use this as a pool alarm to help prevent my two toddlers from gaining access to the pool unattended. I find it crazy that an alarm they sell for alarm systems has such a terrible warranty and clearly lack of interest in following up on the warranty.Old review, this part is still validI use this on my pool gate as an alarm with my 2gig go control alarm system. There is another review that walks you through how to set it up and it works perfectly! I get an alarm when the gate opens, but also if it's left open for now over a minute my alarm system will text me notifying me. Having 2 kids in the house both under 3 this gives me a little more security that they won't have access to the pool without adult supervision.

Very good range
Very good so far. I bought four of these to put on four exterior gates on my residential property and connect to my 2gig panel. Two of the four gates are fairly far away from the control panel, w/ the furthest being probably 200+ ft, so I was a little bit worried this would have the range without having a repeater. So far (I've had them running about a week, and will update this review if I have problems) they have had no range issues.Installation was very easy, using the included screws on aluminum gates. I'm not very handy and it took me only a few minutes each. The larger unit includes a "tamper" feature in case someone attempts to rip it off.I find these very useful to have on an exterior gate. While I don't have them set to trigger an alarm, I do have them set to trigger a chime on my alarm panel as well as, via alarm.com, send me a push notification any time a gate is opened or a text/email any time one of the gates is left open for a specific period of time. Previously, I was constantly worried that my yard guys would leave a gate open and my dog would get out, and I no longer have to worry about that. It's also nice for security, getting that chime or push notification if someone is on the property when no one is supposed to be. This is a force multiplier if you have security cams, as the notification the gate opens when no one is home is a good reason to pull up your cameras.Edit: About 11 months later and these sensors are still going strong with zero reliability issues. Still on the original batteries too.

Heavy duty, high quality outdoor-rated alarm sensor
I used this sensor to monitor/integrate my overhead garage doors into my alarm system. They work great. I chose this sensor over the smaller indoor sensors because my garage gets pretty hot in the summer and cold in the winter. I wanted a heavy duty outdoor-rated sensor that could handle the large temperature swings. This fit the bill perfectly. They are a little on the large side, so you may have to get creative in how you mount it if using it as a garage door sensor.

Great Shed or Gate Security Solution
Bought this the other day and it took a total of 15 minutes to link it to my Honeywell Lynx Touch 5100 and install it in my shed. My shed is approximately 40 feet from the house and it works perfect. Other reviews I saw said it can go 200 feet plus from your panel. This is hands down the best solution to protect your shed from a thief stealing your outdoor power tools. As expected I am very satisfied with the quality of this product from Honeywell. The entire alarm is well designed and very user friendly.
