BUYER BEWARE!!!!!<<<Not New>>> BUYER BEWARE!!!!!
BUYER BEWARE!!!!! I Gave this 5 stars as I have used these drives for years with less than a 2% failure rate. I also realize that these are out of production, however THIS ITEM WAS SOLD AS NEW WHEN IT WAS IN FACT NOT!!! This was an Amazon fulfillment so I didn't expect this. BUYER BEWARE!!!!! If used or recon (not sure which this is) is OK then go for it. BUYER BEWARE!!!!!Update 7/2/14 - This USED drive has massive defective sectors (I used Spinrite by GRC) and SMART is warning of imminent drive failure. Its going back and I will look elsewhere.Update 7/2/14 - Returned it. There is a product out there called spinrite, (google it) that can usually fix a bad hard drive as long as they aren't too far gone. Its also great for testing supposed NEW drives like these. Also just because a drive is blank without any data doesn't mean it is new. It is very easy to clean a drive.FYI this drive was not a reconn as WD would have put it in one of their branded anti-static bags and secondly would never have let a drive leave in the condition this one was in.The seller tried to get me to take down my negative review by offering me $10. I told them no-way as long as they are selling these as new. You would think they would at least test them or.... are they letting them out the door with known defects?

Great Product
I needed a larger capacity HDD to replace the original low capacity HDD, copy Windows plus all contents to the new HDD.Installed new HDD and downloaded WD's recommended software to copy all existing data to new hard drive. The image copy software will assign new addresses to all storage devices connected to the PC, disregard this. De-install and remove old HDD and new HDD.Installed the new WD HDD in place of the old HDD, powered on the PC. The PC booted and all storage devices connected addresses were re-assigned correctly after the software did it's thing automatically.Read all instructions carefully if you like me never did this before, and follow all safety precautions. The new WD HDD has been operating flawlessly, it is a little noisier than the old Samsung HDD, but no big deal (I can hear the new WD HDD seeks). My PC is running Windows XP, my next step is to install Windows 7 as my devices will not support Windows 8. This is going to be a bigger challenge as many of my programs will have to be re-installed under Windos 7. I did install a PCI video card in preparation for Windows 7, after disabling the on-board video/graphics device all information was displayed on the monitor, plus I now have dual monitor support. This should extend the life of my ten year old Dell Dimension 2400.

Not Quite Right
There's something wonky about this drive. Although sold as new, SMART reports that it is about to fail. The older Dell computer it's installed into actually halts at boot-up, warns of impending failure, suggests backing up data, and requires F1 to be pressed before continuing to boot. Viewing the raw SMART data in Linux just doesn't look right. Either the drive is so old that SMART is not being read correctly or this drive is used. Either way, having booting halt each time is a minor nuisance.

Happy with the drive
Careful inspection of the drive leads me to believe it's new, and not refurbished as some have claimed about these drives. I was glad to see that.No problems initializing drive, setting up partitions, etc.I used clonezilla to restore partitions from a smaller aging drive on a machine not really worth upgrading to SATA (no sata interface on MB).Used standard shipping, package arrived faster than expected. My only complaint would be that the shipper used USPS when most others use UPS for shipping. USPS will not leave a package if no one is home, and they come during the middle of the day, so it's a 5 mile trip to the post office and stand in line to get the package. I wish that shippers would stop using USPS.

Buying a bad hard drive could cost you a lot.
This unit replaced a hard drive in my old XP computer that had died. I needed to run XP for both personal and business use, so I figured I would put in a brand new drive and have a working machine for years to come. After about 10 hours work in re-installing the operating system along with all of my development software, the new drive died.To be fair, the seller offered me a replacement (which I was afraid could be just part of a bad production run or drives), or a refund (if I would return the defective drive). Neither of these options seemed desirable to me since I had already replaced the drive and put in another 10 hours of work setting it up.

runs beautifully, upgrades an old computer very nicely-would purchase again
just installed drive, runs beautifully, upgrades an old computer very nicely-would purchase again!!! If you have an older IDE drive computer you had better buy one of these as a backup because they aren't going to be around much longer and the price is starting to climb because of this fact. Glad I got mine now- thinking of buying another- In fact I'm going too, can't beat the price!!! Yeah- just bought 2 more- both were new and one was less than 20 dollars-can't hardly beat that...

Works in ORIGINAL XBOX.
Works in my Original 1.0 Xbox (softmod). Drive was easy to set up and LOCKED. Used Chimp to clone drive and UnleashX to format the F: drive. I can now forever preserve my old KOTOR discs and other gems for this great console!

Replacement for a backup drive that went bed. This one arrived at the intended time and so far is quite reliable. FWIW my soon to be upgraded workhorse Debian linux box is still working with a Western Digital HD bought tin 2002.
