Lathe Grooving Tool Holder Grooving Cut-Off Tool Holder MGEHR1616-3 With 11pcs MGMN300-M Indexable Carbide Grooving Inserts

Finally had a chance to use these for a job. My first attempt to use them, I had the center line to high and had bad results. This time I centerd the tool to material, (alum) and made some vacuum plugs for a Gen 4 ZX10 kawasaki that I'm making a custom fuel rail for. This customer is using larger injectors and needs a rail that will allow for more fuel. Anyway I used this .080" wide tool and plunge cut the diameters dry and traversed the OD to size, made the O-ring groves and parted off all with this tool. Finish was really nice on the OD. At first tried using cutting oil but the force to break thru the oil film and start a cut was more than I liked so I ran the tool dry, that way the tool started to cut instantly. Came out really well and repeated on multiple parts. Parts done on a South Bend 9A manual lathe.

A very good cutoff /grooving and profiling tool ,good for everything except roughing . only downside is the insert doesn't last as long as bigger insert tools, but for getting in to tight spaces is where it shines. Cut a lot of stainless with this cutter.For the money its impressive and the inserts are cheap to.

Very good quality tool holder for the price and with ten carbide inserts, a bargain. The tool and inserts arrived a couple of hours before I ruined (due to carelessness) my identical tool holder and insert. Perfect timing!

Inserts are sharp and easily parts soft steel off -but- these inserts are extremely brittle. Push a little too hard or bump it on almost anything and you will be replacing that insert. I've used about half of the inserts up because it takes almost nothing to crumble them. They do cut nice when everything is perfectly setup though. Do you have patience and a light touch? Then these are for you. Me personally though, I won't order them again. Just too delicate.

I purchase this tool for a 10 inch lathe that normally uses 1/2 inch shank tools. My tool holder is large enough to accomodate this larger tool. However, there is not enough adjustment to lower the tool to the center. I like the deeper bottom holder for the carbide tips since this is what usually breaks. That made it worthwhile to cut about a quarter inch off the bottom to allow centering. I read the negative reviews on the inserts. This was a concern since all my insert are from inexpensive sources. Purchased expensive Korloy inserts to test against the insert that came with the tool. The inner groove was made with the Korloy insert and the outer groove with the inserts that came with the tool. The metal is 1 inch diameter 304 stainless steel. To took me half the time to make the outer grove than the inner. Don't see an advantage in spending more money on a name brand insert.

The tool itself it great. I have been employed as a machinist for 38 years and the tool is excellent and given the price, a real bargain. The carbide inserts on the other hand, not so great. The first job I used the tool on was for parting off some Type 316 stainless steel and I soon figured out that I was able to cut off one part per insert cutting edge. Type 316 is tough stuff to work with so I suspect that most other materials would give a longer cutting edge life.

Why pay more? These work great on my 12" - 2hp lathe. I pushed my last one a little too hard, the insert snapped and took the tip of the tool with it, so now there's no support under the tip of the insert. It's also cheaper to buy this took with the inserts included, than to buy the inserts on their own!

I bought this (actually three of them) for use on my South Bend 9 and 10k lathes. I have not found them to be very good. The carbide inserts shatter easily in use, and when they do the insertion holder is usually damaged, making another failure more likely.
