It should have been better
It should have been better! With the subject matter and some of the elements, this really should have been better. Many of us have experienced Parents passing from cancer and those heartfelt elements where here in winding down a very painful cycle but I do think there was too much emphasis on the main character "son" being gay and then the wind if the friends transgender/gay adopted sun. It was way of tune to dedicate a hole section to a transgender kid putting on a show to emulate Lady Gaga and it was kind of gross watching a child/young teen putting on a highly sexualized show. That scene and content was a complete distraction just to show how confident he was compared to the main character that obviously had less confidence when he came out as a young adult. That could have been done better in a way that made the point w/out all the noise. More could have been made of having to return to the neat, dull, fake, suburban life of Sacrament (give me shivers to have to return to that strip mall of a town). More could have and should have been made of the contrast of living in suburban boxes that all look the same, with dad walking the mom into the park every day of neat little tidy flowers, on a lawn poisoned w/Monsanto fertilizer, a known cause of cancer. Again, so much more could have been made of this. I lost my mom to cancer in a suburb of polluted water, polluted beef, poison paint, and so on. But as a young adult, I actually knew that because when my mother got cancer, I did the research and though how ironic it was how all around us those very things we keep fighting to consume and protract and do, are the very things that kill us. This drove significant changes for my lifestyle, though many I left behind still grew up to live in tiny boxes, still eat the polluted beef, and fertilize their lawns with Monsanto fertilizer. This should have been better.

Upfront and honest
The movie outcome (sad) is right upfront at the beginning of the film so you know the inevitable outcome. I enjoyed this film because it chronicles the life of the main male character in dealing with his mother, his sexuality and his family. This is a slightly different role for Molly Shannon but it is very believable and there are some lighter and also poignant moments throughout the film.

A Compassionate and Complexly Real Film
Superb, complex, moving, compelling, and utterly convincing, this movie is one of the best films of the last year or so. The dialogue is keen-eared and sharp, the acting wonderfully accomplished by every person on screen, even by the minor characters who may appear in only one scene, the story rightly troubling, disturbing (as it must be), and deeply touching. This is a film that restores humanity and a profound, searching, observant realism to American movie making, similar in this sense, say, to Moonlight or Manchester by the Sea. It is of similar caliber and importance. It is a finely written and filmed and emotionally significant movie that deserves to be seen, no, should be seen by anyone who cares about compassion in a world which too often denies it.

Authentic, funny, and sad
I loved this movie. The humor in the face of such a loss was uplifting. The movie showed the way life goes on in the face of a tragedy, but found the humor in it. It is truly sad to see your own life being replaced by another, in a job, at a wedding, etc., while you are still alive, but that is life, eh? Really authentic. The acting is great.

A great non-comedy performance by Molly Shannon
Pretty solid indie film with great performances by Molly Shannon and Jesse Plemmons (known to me as the geeky kid from Friday night lights previously). A nice, funny at times, look at the struggles of life (and death).

Shows the awkwardness and vulnerability of life.
I really enjoyed this movie. I would recommend for anyone to see. It's relate-able in a lot of ways. It shows the awkwardness and vulnerability of real life, but with some comic relief.

Heartwarming
Heartwarming. Some of us never get to say goodbye to a parent before they pass. After watching what they family endures I think I'd be happier with a quick end. Selfish, but true.

Very beautifully moving and funny picture from first time director Chris ...
Very beautifully moving and funny picture from first time director Chris Kelly. Loved seeing Molly Shannon being given the opportunity to stretch her wings as an actress since seeing her in Year of the Dog a few years ago and she gives and exquisite performance. Am excited to see Jesse Plemons in more things since I am only familiar with him from this and Breaking Bad.
