Is there a spot to run cords inside to the back?

You can easily slip cords through the divide between the two back panels--no need for drilling.

Can the bottom dividers be left out?

Yes, the metal racks that divide records can be left out. The middle wooden support can't be left out though.

Does the smell ever go away? I ordered this and haven't assembled as it is a gift for my boyfriend, but it smells terrible? Is this expected or did i

Mine didn't really have a smell besides brand new wood smell. Make sure everything is correct with it. But any smell should go away unless something is rotten. Mine is still in great condition and is beyond solid.
