aluminium rods
ive tried several types of aluminium 'welding' rods - total crap and one lot were still solid after the test part was a blob of molten metal so i didnt have raised hopes for these...... - they worked great - extremely easy to use and gave a neat clean job that was quickly filed to finish!!! obviously, this is a metal filled pores type of connection and is nowhere like as strong as a good real weld but its plenty strong enough - even to mild shock loading (clouted with a manchester spanner!!) as long as u control the heat and keep it high, but not too high, a fair sized joint could be made. my needs are for models so most things are tiny but i do see lots of possibilities for this great product.

Worked Perfectly
Did exactly as described. I degreased the item needing repaired (an Aluminium oil-cooler) and cleaned the parts with the wire brush. I heated the parts with a MAP+ torch checking every now and again to see if it was hot enough. When it was the rod melted quickly and filled the crack in the cooler. I reheated and gave it a wipe with the brush and added a little more rod. Previously I had bought both cheaper rods, and more expensive major branded rods, the cheaper ones did not melt, the more expensive you get two rods for the price of the five in this pack. These worked as well as the more expensive rods.

You need to be pretty skilled or have a small piece
The product seemed to work as described at first but was unreliable and produced a faulty/weak joints that could snap under stress revealing a poor bond to the metal below. Iโm pretty experienced with copper brazing/soldering and based on reviews was expecting this product to be simple to use. However, assembling a box from 3mm aluminium sheets was a nightmare using this product. Using a MAPP gas torch at 2400 degrees C with loads of heat output, and with clamping, heated the metal to above the solder melting temp exactly as I for other solders and melted the solder into the joint. For large pieces and thick metal itโs difficult getting even heat and avoiding sheet warping; maybe down to my lack of skill but definitely not โeasyโ to use. I not would recommend this product unless youโre experienced with aluminium brazing and for small pieces and thin aluminium. Personally it seems to me that a flux is required despite the claims that this doesnโt need it. Even though the braze stick was whetting all surfaces of the joint fine and app flowing into the joint perfectly into it, the joint was weak on cooling- much weaker than they the surrounding metal. Itโs supposed to be stronger. The problem with large pieces is also that cooling causes thermal stress, and can rip these weak joints apart - this would not happen with normal flux solder whose joints are stronger than the surrounding metal- and should jot happen if this product is effective without flux. The fact it is so repeatably unreliable in this way suggests that despite claims, this โflux freeโ solder is not bonding efficiently with the aluminium surface even when melted directly by the hot metal this basically isnโt working as it should. It doesnโt work well at all on large sheets as tye thermal changes crack the joint as it cools / every time no matter what. Works apparently on smaller pieces or if you have thin aluminium but itโs not clear how strong these joints really are - they may be weak too). Overall it seems this product isnโt dissolving the aluminium oxide layer to form a strong bond. Flux might solve this if a suitable type exists for this alloy. As itโs stands, itโs pretty useless and Iโll be looking for an alternative product next time or a flux to use with this to render it actually effective.

Really happy with this product. I managed to complete a job without the need of tig welding!
I managed to complete a job without the need of TIG welding! Plus could join smaller parts together with less warping as it melts at a lower temperature! I got some nice clean looking joins and its changed my thinking on how parts may be made in the future so glad I gave this a try!

Practice practice practice
Great but really not easy to get right Take you time ruff the hell of the surface and put a good angle on any plate or sheet I was joining 2mm sheet at right angle and struggled. Small nozzle touch at 1700ยฐ ish. It would probably be better with thicker metel.

Very good if you follow the instructions
I used these to repair the pillion footrest hanger on my motorcycle. As in the title follow the instructions carefully. Take your time and you will end up with a strong durable joint. A little bit of filing and polishing and you can hardly tell a repair has been done.
