I live in a dryer part of California, and its easy to accidentally run your tread down to where it is unsafe, because bald tires handle dry roads fine. Then when the rains finally do come, you realize you don't have the traction you should. These are small, easy to use and read, and you should probably keep one in your car to periodically check the tires.Can also be useful to make sure your tires are wearing evenly. If one side is wearing faster than the other, you likely need to get your alignment checked.
