The best small radio I have used
I just received this, so here are my first impressions. The radio is top notch. Amazon is not. The box arrived on its own, the Sangean box with a shipping label slapped on top. This has been happening more often, absolutely no shipping container, just the product with a label. It was undamaged, but I bet many are damaged.I think that most people read these reviews for the product and not the shipping, so the above did not affect my rating. The radio is a HOME RUN so far for this type of small, portable radio: Truly Excellent reception. Long antenna, but I pick up weak stations my other radios cannot with the antenna only partially out. Sound Quality: This is a big one for me. Most radios like this sound incredibly 'tinny', all upper frequency and harsh. This one is much warmer and has a very pleasing tone to it. All the other stuff: well built, weather alert, alarms, clear display with backlight, time displays even when playing the radio, can plug it in or use AA batteries (not expensive, heavy D size)'.Two minor complaints: 1. I would prefer a rotating knob for volume instead of the buttons. Perhaps a second smaller knob below the tuning knob on the side, or on the front. But, that is just my preference, I'm sure many folks will be happy with the big, easy to see and use buttons.2. No aux input. Most of these kinds of radios don't have that, I don't know why. Are there not many others out there that would play this while working at a desk, and like to be able to plug in your computer for sound out of it? Or use your cell phone to pipe in music on the back patio? I did not deduct a star for this omission because to be fair almost all radios in this category don't have it.It has some heft to it, particularly when the batteries are installed (batteries were not included with the radio).Summary: I have gone through many small portable radios. They either don't last, or annoy me with the incredibly poor quality sound. Finally, this one appears to do everything I was looking for. It is much more expensive than most in this category. In my opinion you absolutely get what you pay for. I hope to have it for many years. I will use it as a bed side radio and alarm clock, outside on the patio, at my desk when I work, and the weather channel functions when needed.I will update this review if I have any problems or issues over time.

The best FM receiver I have tested!
The Sangean PR-D12 AM FM Weather Alert portable radio is a wonderful design, with some amazing reception. Be prepared for some surprises.Search the radio and my name on YouTube for a full in-depth presentation of this receiver.Features I like about this radio:FM reception is out of this world!Easy to read LCD Display.Weather Band Reception is above average.Weather Alert Mode.FM Stereo with headphones.AM band performs well during the evening and daytime hours and responds well with a passive loop.Clock is displayed under the Frequency! They got it right :)3" Speaker sounds good on all the bands.Quick preset access on top of the radio. No rubber molding!Normal, plastic buttons, not rubber/silicone buttons.Uses AA batteries.Includes AC adapter.Dual Alarm feature.FM tunes 50, 100, or 200kHz stepping.AM, 9 or 10kHz stepping.Seek tuning on the tuning wheel.Twenty Presets each for AM and FM.Features that could be added or improved on:AM AGC circuit. Seems to soft mute at night, and cause clicking during the day on faint stations.A proper handle of some type.A lock switch.Overall, I am very happy with the FM performance of this radio. It will be added to my FM DX project that I run during the Summer months. The supplied AC adapter makes that easy to setup. The AM band is very sensitive, and needs just a little tweaking to make it perfect. A beautiful display, easy to tune, it is very easy to recommend this radio to anyone looking for a quality, table top portable.

Tips over easily
It's got a lot features and gets good reception but it's pretty easy to tip it over by just pressing any of the face buttons. I usually have to hold it in place from the top and trying to forget to press one of the saved station buttons on the top. The sounds find but I mostly use it to listen to AM talk shows.

My armchair radio
Provides room filling volume. Very sensitive receiver - I tune in AM stations 400+ miles away at night with no problem. FM and WX band reception is also excellent. Very pleased with radio's performance - for the price I think it's a bargain.

Very dissapointed
I used to like Sangean radios but this one let me down. Poor reception on am ,whistling noises and that darn soft mute from the dsp chip that mutes less than perfect signals makes this a no go for me. One of the worst part for me is the lack of a power lock to keep it turned off if the switch gets bumped and runs down your batteries. I'm an old guy who loves radio and what happened to this one. Sangean?
